I agree, that was the best snow I have ever ridden, and it was on lake Calhoun. It was like mountain powder. The riding was so much like summer in the water. I hope I can get out later today.

I haven't been kiting since last February due to a torn ACL, but today the surgeon said "go kiting". It's great having sports medicine doctors who seem to understand sports like kiteboarding. I remember back in the skateboard days (1980ish) they would say "well, you shouldn't ride tho...

Calhoun

I got about an hour in on Calhoun today. The ice was better than I thought it would be. The rain left it just bumpy enough to hold an edge and the 1/2 inch of snow that we got last night. I was actually over powered at times on my 16. I didn't go 65 mph, but I went faster that the bicycles.

Cannon was fun, after a slippery drive to get there. The smooth snow made up for the bumpy wind. It was great to turn my snowboard and not hear my edge scrape. On my first run out I turned to come back and I couldn't see where I came from, not even my tracks. I don't know how early you are going out...

I was there on Sunday, with 4 inches of new snow on top of some crust and clear ice. It looked great, I just needed more wind.

Maybe someone has a more current report.

Tom F and I were on lake Harriat, which is pretty good on a NW wind. The ice has some bumpy spots and and some glass. The bumps really aren't a problem, I just ride with one foot infront of the other which is like having one long edge. If I see bad ice coming I either fly the kite high and pick up m...

Skates

I had my skates cut to a wider radius to give me more blade contact on the ice. This cost about $30.00 at General Sports on 50th and France. The skates still work fine for hockey and are much more stable with a kite. I must have been going 30mph with a 16M kite and about 9mph of wind yesturday. If y...

Welcome back Aaron!

We use to skateboard together in the 70s. Infact, some of that old gang is still skating around here, the only change is we bring our kids now.

It would be great to see you again. You can reach me at 612-824-2365.

Have you tried kiteboarding?

I kited on Big Marine Lake this winter and it seemed good. It's near co. rd. 4 and Manning rd. Have any of you sailed there?

I guess Kiteboarding is not a crime

I met with a Hearing Officer today, about my citation for kiting on Calhoun last month. After a 1 1/2 hour wait, I presented my case and he threw out the $130.00 ticket. I told the Hearing Officer that when I called the park police they said the "Ice Not Safe" signs are up all winter to ri...

I think the sign said Danger Ice Not Safe, Keep Off. Brian may rememeber better. But either way. my defence would be along the lines of some of your posts. That the parkboard puts up these signs to release them from liability. They are up all year long. So isn't it up to us to decide if the ice is s...

Eric, Those are good suggestions. I don't have an ice auger, but if anyone has one and wants to check the thickness, it would be good information to know if this happens again. As far as not riding on Calhoun. I intend to keep riding there. These lakes are what make living in Minneapolis so great. I...

Brian, I just called the Park Police and asked when the Ice Not Safe signs went up. They said they are always up and they won't ever tell us the ice is safe. So my question is how can they give us a citation for being on the ice if they won't confirm that it is ever safe? Don't they put a hockey rin...

Not much snow on the lake. After trying skis most of us switched to skates on Calhoun. It was the usual, gusty and bumpy but fun to ride.

We must have just missed you Denis. Tom and I were out on Calhoun from 1:00 to 3:00. The wind and ice was good for my 12M, but it did seem to come up after we left. The north end of that lake on a west wind is a little scary for jumping, the tall buildings really whip the wind around.
