South shore of Superior

I've been driving up to Bayfield at least once a week this fall for work (with no time to sail) and have put some serious thought into sailable locations. Let me first say that sailing in Duluth has it's thrills. But it is a shore break with the waves stacked on top of eachother. What I am after (th...

2005 Crossing

We were very fortunate this year to have both wind and warm temperatures. It was still a tough one to call, with the wind varying from 10 to 20 mph within an hour of the start. As always the crossing staff did a wonderful job of putting it all together. It takes huge amounts of coordination to pull ...

Lake Superior Forecast for Thursday is West 15 - 25 knots

In case you are free tomorrow, the forecast is looking terrific! I found an excellent launch for west winds at the northern tip of Wisconsin at Little Sand Bay. There is a beautiful campground with lots of grassy rigging space, bathrooms, etc... I found this a few weeks ago. What makes it exciting i...

morning report

Well it isn't looking too good so far - there are just a few gusts blowing. There is a new webcam view of canal park at http://www.lsmma.com/webcam_large.htm to give you a real time view of the lake. My hope is that it will come up as the day progresses.

In Search Of .... Sideshore on Superior

In the middle of yesterday's wash session (after taking a beating under-rigged) I started to think "why in the bleep am I here right now?" Sure, I re-rigged and managed to get some planing time, but it was one bleep of a beating in the shore-break. My wife commented something like "is...

Leech Lake

Hi, I've sailed at Leech a few times - there is a launch right in the city of Walker at their public beach, just a block from the DQ. I've also sailed at a phenomenal launch off of Hwy 200 at Whipolt, on the south shore. There is a public boat ramp right off of Hwy 200, you can't miss it. The entire...

update

I wish I had good news for all of you but after a week of looking the search has been called off, without finding his body. It is amazing how a series of simple decisions has led to a tragic ending. Please be careful.

Read this before you go on the water!!

Hi, I'm not sure if you have heard but there was an accident on Monday here in Duluth. It is a literal nightmare as Jim King has apparently drowned after falling out of a small boat on the St. Louis River. They have not yet recovered his body after two days of searching. Although we had primarily a ...

Wind Direction on Superior

A side - shore day sounds pretty dreamy to me. We should consider a windsurfari cruise up in the islands some time. Looks like the forecast is now NE for tomorrow - hopefully the rain will hold off. Chip, have you ever launched up at Lester in a NE? The trick would be timing between waves. The landi...

Way to go Chip, those pictures are great! I've seen (on the net) some ways to remotely control the disposable type cameras - what do you think of trying to rig one up? How about mast -top? Sounds like a good winter project to me.

our own reality

Yeah, if it had only been, say 20 degrees, or even 10 degrees warmer.... If you are on top side of your board the whole time then no problem, right? I remember a conversation comparing sailing on Lake Superior to other surf zones - it truly is a tall, wickedly cold mountain. Like you said Randy, the...

Chickened Out

I stopped by the Tot Lot at 4:30 and watched Randy out in the surf having a great time. It was only 43 degrees here and I didn't have the ying to get my yang out on the water. Randy sure had it though - he was catching lots of air time out there - I should have had a camera. The weather radio said 2...

Wind?

Will do for pics Tighe, if the wind actually gets here. There is a cloud front that has stalled right over us - it would have been a better call today for Mille Lacs I'm afraid. If it does happen here it will be N or NE. Chip - I was thinking of just launching down by your place or by the Sky Harbor...
