Leech Lake?

Post by johnbaker17 »

Does anyone know about the windsurfing prospects on Leech Lake up by Walker? I'd like to find out about possible launches and overall sailability.
Thanks!

Leech Lake

Hi, I've sailed at Leech a few times - there is a launch right in the city of Walker at their public beach, just a block from the DQ. I've also sailed at a phenomenal launch off of Hwy 200 at Whipolt, on the south shore. There is a public boat ramp right off of Hwy 200, you can't miss it. The entire bay is pure sand. It has some huge (and I mean HUGE) wind fetch which results in some awsome waves. Wind direction for both places is likely W - NW to E. Of the two Whipolt is the best, by far, but the launch in Walker works well if you have family with you. I've heard there is a campground somewhere on the north side which you can sail from, but I've never been there.

It's funny you should mention Woman Lake. That's actually where I might be going, and looking at the map, I couldn't help but notice that huge body of water (Leech) just a short drive away. My friend has a cabin on Woman and that's where we'd stay. Do you think it's worth it to haul everything to Leech or is Woman good enough?

Leech is BIG, so not the best place to sail alone. Woman Lake is A++. In the middle of the big part of the lake is Horseshoe Island with a fantastic sand beach on the south side. Out of all the places in Minnesota, da Woman rules. You can get over a mile reach no problem. :D

The brothers place. Great for S & SE winds.
