Duluth!

Post by Coach »

Who'z up for a dawn patrol on the big momma? It looks plum windy for tomorrow mornin'.

I'm thinkin' of hittin' it early for a couple of hours so I can be back in the city by noon-ish.

And, I ain't talkin' no Tot Lot or Park Point. I'd like to give it a shot at Lester or some other spot within 30 minutes up the shore from Duluth. Lester should be good tomorrow...

I'd rather do it with a bro' or two - it could be a bit scary solo... Anyone up for it? Windsurf or kite, it don't matter none... Yeehaw!

Call me if you are interested in heading up, or are on your way in the mornin' - 651-428-7969.

If it weren't for the new baby and the decent forecast locally, I would be there. :D

morning report

Post by JimW »

Well it isn't looking too good so far - there are just a few gusts blowing. There is a new webcam view of canal park at http://www.lsmma.com/webcam_large.htm to give you a real time view of the lake. My hope is that it will come up as the day progresses.

Yah - saw that this morning looked weak. Not horrible, but weak. The whole idea was to try and catch some sideshore waves at Lester, so maybe it will build up for late today or tomorrow am.

Yeah, but the idea was dawn patrol... Personally, I have a midday meeting. Maybe worth a trip this evening, though.

Hey guys, thanks for the heads-up on the potential ride yesterday. I really hadn’t planned on going out but when I got back into town at 4:30 it was still rippin. I sailed from my house down to the Tot Lot, a distance of about 3 miles. No one else there except for a handful of surfers.

The wind was a little North making it side on-shore with port ramps. I could generally sail out at almost at a 45 degree angle to the beach, picking my way through the waves with plenty of power to run away when I had to. It was a BLAST! You could play chicken with the waves, run straight at a 6 foot wave about to swallow you and then turn and run away and around it. The only difficulty was that if you tried to run straight down the beach, it was hard to avoid going over the handlebars or be constantly launched off a wave because you couldn’t shed enough power. The wind was a fairly steady around 40 mph with patchy gusts. Water temperature was beautiful for superior. In fact I was a bit overheated. The right sail for me probably would have been about 4.5 or a little smaller. I was rigged a little bigger to keep the power up on the inside. Waves on the outside edge of the shore break were running 6 to 8 feet.

I sailed from around 4:45 until almost 8:30 at which point I had to figure out how to sail 3 miles down the beach (without going over the handlebars) without killing myself and then drag my gear up the beach.. A good day is when you don’t have the strength to carry your gear back off the beach. This was definitely one of those days.

I would honestly have to rank the day as one of my top 10 in 25 years of sailing Superior… you guys REALLY missed a big one.

Awesome Chip! Sounds like you hit it right!

I thought the storms were going to hit in the evening, so opted for WBL... basically, chickened out again. It's not always easy to commit to 4+ hours in the car and $40 in gas when it doesn't look ideal.

I'm glad to hear at least you had a heck of a time. :-)

Living life backwards

Post by Randy »

Seems like real quality living has us reviewing our daily decisions backwards, before we take action. Reviewing my Wednesday, I suspected Superior would be at its best, tried to change some previous commitments, but didn't try hard enough... Certainly no complaints, since the day was so beautiful as it was...but upon review, I would have preferred to blow off a couple appointments, sailing locally, and Santana for a piece of what you've just described. Again, no complaint, no complaint...just a little hole from missed opportunity for Mother's great summer gift.
Anyway, looks like today I won't make the same mistake as we're graced with perfect westerly wind. Living life backward, I'm seeing a beautiful day at Cannon Falls.
Ride...just be it!

Sacrifice and compromise (while keeping your JOB) - that's what it seems to be about. I gave up yesterday hoping for tomorrow (today). Forecast looks good.

Chip - you da man. During my obsessive/compulsive phase I kept calling Sky Harbor and gritting my teeth. I was wondering what the conditions would be like at 050 degrees - you've now confirmed my thoughts! I will continue to dream about Side-On Superior. Late June sure has delivered!

when I called sky harbor, it was running generally in the 20's with gusts to about 32. I beleive Sky Harbor is in Knots so it reads 15% low, it averages, and is behind the dune line - so it is usually a good 10 MPH low as compaired to what your will find outside the shore break.
