whatever the course ends up being I'd be in favor of more markers. I remember in both snow and water crossings on several occassions being clueless as to what heading I should be going, where the next marker was/ought to be, ending up in the wrong spot because I didn't see the marker.

On Mille Lacs, having a wrist or pocket GPS, or at least a compass, is a really good piece of equipment to have with you. A compass is really cheap. Nice information when visibility drops off or you can't see shoreline.

One summer Crossing, with great visibility, somehow a large portion of the pack got on the wrong tack all following each other too far South. They did a lot of tacking late to get up to the finish at Garrison.
