Winter Kiteboarding for Cancer Event

Post by Tighe »

I've been in talks with Tonya Farman and the director of the Twin Cities Loppet about doing a Kiteboarding Event to raise money for cancer down on Calhoun the weekend of the Loppet (Feb 2-3). The concept would be similar to the KB4C event in the Gorge last summer which raised $64,000 for Cancer research:

*Triangle ccourse laid out on Calhoun
*Maximum number of laps awarded
*Individual riders would collect donations for their participation. We'd also would work to get corporate donations.
*Considering a 24hours of kiteboarding for cancer...riders must stay on the ice..relay teams. Might be cool to have corporate teams, like a Best Buy team, battling it out against the Target team...battling it out in the ice, raising money for the battle against cancer.
*Considering having other options for going around the course if the wind doesn't blow, skiing, snowshoeing, running, etc.

My mother died of cancer 20 years ago, I want do something to help end this terrible plague.

My question to all of you is, would you participate? I'd like to think we, as the largest snowkiting community in the country, could do great things here. It's going to be a lot of work to put on and I'm also looking to put together a team to make this happen.

If you want photo coverage, I'd donate my time and photos to the event.

Ben would be willing to take a couple of aerial photos from a plane? If so let me know so I can arrange a flight.

I think it would be cool to have some aerial photos if this ends up happening.

Thanks Ben. The mayor wants to brand the Twin Cities as the athletic outdoor capital of the midwest. I think shots of dozens of kites with the skyline in the background would most likely find their way into city brouchures for years to come.

I'm game for whatever you guys want. Just let me know and i'll plan accordingly. I have blocked the entire weekend off for now.

I have shot a few 24 hour mtn bike races and they are insanely fun. How would we do the night rides? Headlights and glowsticks?

I'm in Tighe, let mek now what you have planned, I was just at teh Cancer awareness event this last weekend and walked with my wifes company, maybe we could get corporate sponsors to do the Shirts that we could wear on the outside of our jackets, stuff like that. Feb is coming up pretty quickly, if we could get some kind of flyer going I could present it to my company and Caroline could present it to her Company and maybe get some donations and get them to do Shirts, Teams sounds like a great Idea relay style, that way we could get more beginner's involved that would be able to kite the event too. This is a fantastic Idea Tighe, what a community of kiters we have, just put the idea out there and people just jump right in, awesome. Tighe sounds like you have T.V. ties or have approached the T.V. stations before, i think the Mayor would eat this up!!! If they can have a Hockey game event with the mayors backing I think this would go over big time, especially by doing it for such a great cause!

Another thought Tighe, maybe we get a small commity together to try and plan some stuff out, like what type of permits we need from the city and stuff like that, do we need someone with an event planning license, just another thought?

This could turn out to be a huge event!! It would be nice to be able to make a mark on the community for the kiters, and be noticed a little more? I have already spoke to my company and they would donate.
