I was going to ask what these isobars have to do with Duluth. I figure that you're predicting NE wind. I wasn't sure how you can tell what direction the wind will blow by looking at isobars. I found the answer here.

The NWS Open Water forecast for Superior also provides some clues to what wind might be doing 5 days out:

.SATURDAY...EAST WINDS 5 TO 15 KNOTS INCREASING TO 10 TO
20 KNOTS. WAVES BUILDING TO 2 TO 4 FEET.
.SUNDAY...EAST WINDS 15 TO 25 KNOTS. WAVES BUILDING TO 4 TO
6 FEET.

From what I've heard it's sailable - Chip has some good stories.

One thing to note is that the Open Water will commonly call for an Easterly but the wind will veer NE in Duluth.

I agree with Dave. It bet it will have a fair amount of NE in it for Sunday, if the past is any indication. I am not sure if I can pull the trip off, but it looks like it will be good.

If the isobars are anywhere east of south (if that makes any sense) it's NE on the big lake. It's gonna be big Sunday afternoon! I'm giddy! Enough of this sissy wind. I want 40 knots. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The wind came around this morning - its been very, very slowly building off the lake - still only about 5-10 kts. It looks like it should be pretty good tomorrow. You guys mentioned direction issues, a forcast between N and SE generally spells NE on Park Point. I would predict 25 to 35 with nice shorebreak tomorrow - best terrain in months. I'm going to try to hold off until noon.

It was 11kts sustained from 015 at 8:00 at the coast guard base at park point, and increasing. Not much for wave action but it was slowly picking up. See you on the water!

the wind was cranking when I showed up around 4:00. I was nicely powered on my 10m and surfboard.... but where were the waves?? I had my heart set on the 4-7 footers but I don't think we had anything more that 1-3 maby a few 4s. hopefully they will build a bit overnight and reach 7ft by morning.

I plan to get out there about 9:30 tomorow morning... if it's still blowing

I GOT UP THERE AROUND ONE. Alot of the TC crew was already out riding with the locals. I'm guessing upwards of 15 kiters & 6 ws'ers. I was comfortably dialed on my REV 13, and MW managed to stay on his Eclipse 14 the entire time & boost big while we were downsizing to 10's, 9's & 7's. Glad to see such a great turnout! Thanks to RJ for saving my kite from a tumble in the surf! Hope to someday get in tune with "d'Mudda" like the rest of you. :?

It was great to have sun/warmth conditions that , although not warm, were at least better than the Cities for once. There was enough "sun" that the water picked up a sort of ocean-light blue at times near shore. Cool.
I thought conditions near 22nd St. had waves more like 4'-5' out just beyond the break.
It was a great day.
