Re: today thurs Scott's (barts) Wind prediction
Maybe predicting wind is like trying to invest in stocks.......Anyone know what the conversion from mph to knots is??

I think we're going to check out Reddy around noon. Of course, if the wind isn't there, I've only wasted 20 minutes of my life...

or to be more precise,
1 kt = 1.150779 mph
1 kt = 1.150779 mph

or to be more more precise
1 knot = 1.15077945 mph
1 knot = 1.15077945 mph
Re: today thurs Scott's (barts) Wind prediction
Can you be a little more precise?

Re: today thurs Scott's (barts) Wind prediction
forgive me but when I'm doing the math in my head I'll stick to 1.1 as the multiplyer.
Most wind meters these days have both knots and mph anyway.
Since you guys could look it up and get the answer see if you can find out why it's called "knots"
I give you a clue that it's something to do with a length of rope.

Steve keeps his wind meter in the center pocket of his boardies.

And just for the record I bought the smallest wind meter I could find, but it does have a good digital interface.

That is funny.
Re the origin of the term 'knot', I think the knot thing came from the old sailin' days when they used a rope with some sort of a plank tied to the end of it knots spaced evenly (don't know how far apart). To measure their speed, they'd lower the board at the end of the rope into the water and let it drag from the back of the ship.
The rope was coiled in a box on the ship and fed through a small hole just barely bigger than the knots in the rope. As the ship traveled faster, it would force more knots through the hole in the box. They counted the knots to estimate their speed.
Did knot google this, so I'm sure I'll be corrected
