Gathering on the 12 th of July.

Post by steveb »

A reminder that the gatherings the weekend of the 12th of July meeting at Malmo Park on Lake Mille Lacs.
It dawned on me some of you will not have been to the gathering and not know what it is. It's basically a big social event. We try to get together at one place to catch up and meet new people and say hi (beer or soda)
Typically the regional riders have kites you can try or see. It's a chance to share and learn new tricks etc.
It's all water sports so the windsurfers come too, I've even seen windsurfers try kiting at the Gathering.
Just in case the wind gods don't behave bring all your water toys, if you're a musician bring instruments and we'll try to get a jam going.
Bring a smile and a few spare beers.
I think last year we had about 50 water users and their spouses, boyfriends/girlfriends so quite a crew.
See you up there. :D

It really depends upon the wind. If there is wind people will most likely be there most of the day.

The isobars look ok for now, but these things change fast.

I just got the ok from my physical therapist to resume some light riding, so I am planning to be there. I won't be riding much, so I can hold cameras and point those at people.

The bonfire and camping at the Carlsona was a lot of fun last year. Does anybody know if the Carlsona is going to let us to that again? If they do everybody remeber to thank them by buying lots of beer and food!!

Jodie and I will be there if the wind is up. We will probably stay overnight until Sun. Is there a place to camp up there?

I need to get out and ride!! Can't wait.

Dennis, look me up when you are there and we can try some exercises and see if we can get you on the fast track to riding more soon. No charge since I will be there anyway. Sounds like you doing good and are on your way which is great to hear.

Rock on

Previously some of us have stayed at Petes Retreat, about a mile from Malmo on the main rd. There's quit a few places in the area, Mike Foxs posts for the crossing list resorts, I'm sure a search would bring up lodging results.

As Fleet Captain for the Dryden Yacht Club, it's my duty of organizing the sailboat regattas for the season. Nothing says that we have to partcipate in those regattas , just make sure they get organized and completed. I'm working on getting someone in place to do that task this weekend so we can attend the Gathering to which Woodette and I truly enjoy! Looks like warm and windy with good vibe this weekend at Malmo. Where do you think we wanna be?

:P :P

PS. JRN, this is the same weekend the Gathering was last year...

Maybe someone could put together a "sticky" (yikes, I am using made up forum words now) to list the plans for the Gathering and the Crossing listing the essentials and places to crash options.
Just a thought. Thanks for the info!

Winds are looking good for Saturday. Yahoooo!!!!

Anyone up there able to check in with Ron at Carlsona regarding an evening bonfire and camping?

I'll have most of the Slingshot lineup available for Demo if you're interested. Also, I'll have some LAKAWA shirts for sale. Two styles. Lots of colors.

Eric left a message for Ron at Carlsona, but we haven't heard back yet. We'll try him again tonight.

Malmo FYI: As of yesterday, some large, sticky, bright green weeds are floating around in the launch area. They really like to gel together and tangle up your lines if someone is walking your kite out for a launch. Might want to consider rolling up your lines on the grass like you are going to do a self-launch, then walking the kite out 30 feet or so before starting to let line out. Or, if you walk out with lines dragging, kiters and launchers should both check the lines carefully before giving the thumbs up or letting go. Maybe the wind will shift before the weekend and blow these lovelies away...

Also, the grass in the ditch is still pretty soft from the spring rains. Try to park your vehicle on the pavement if possible.
