Building a Kiteboard

Post by kevintimothymohr »

Hi all,
Has anyone ever experimented with building their own kiteboard. I've got some extra time this weekend and I think building my own board might be kind of fun. I think I'm going with the "less is more approach" that this site suggests: http://kitesurfingschool.org/board.htm. I would appreciate any feedback/suggestions if someone has built one in the past. I will keep everyone posted on how my build goes.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Kevin, if you are talking about a weekend project I'm assuming you are building a ply board. I've done a couple last year. One for light winds (2 layers of 1/4" ply and epoxy coated, 152 x 45cm no rocker) and one for windier days (3/8 birch ply and epoxy 130 x 40cm with some rocker). The light wind board worked really good but it's very heavy. The other one worked fine and is not as heavy as the 152 but still heavy. So if you are going for a light wind board I would use 3/8 ply and epoxy if it's not too big and 3/8 ply with some fiberglass if it is 135cm or longer. I've never tried a skim board but that is another alternative for a light wind ply board. For the inserts get ssteel t-nuts at the hardware store they work great. I hope it helps and have fun!
