Buying a Board

Post by JBailey »

Hey all,
I'm sure this has been asked, but I'm trying to gather as much info as I can to buy my first board. Just started kiting on the snow this season, and I am planning on hitting the water for the first time when it warms up. Ideally, I'd like to buy just one board that will work well in the majority of conditions around here (shopping used, most likely). I've read good things about the SS SX 151 board, as well as the Spleene door. I think the 151 may be a bit too big for me though, as I'm around 150 lbs. Maybe the next smaller model would be better suited for my size. Any recommendations for a board that would be good to learn on around here, but also take me well into intermediate skill territory would be appreciated! I fly a 9m and 14m turbo2.

Thx!

Try before you buy! Don't get stuck with something that is un-workable for you. Nancy Blain still rides her 151 & I'm sure she doesn't outweigh you. Or ask, for money back satisfaction garantee if you don't like what you buy. Watch for demo days when local reps let you ride for free. Good Luck

Get a big board like the 151 or the door for your first one.

The only time the board might feel too big is when the wind starts to really blow... but since you are just starting out you probably won't be out in those days.

There is nothing that will make staying upwind easier that I've found than a Door. That said they are expensive even used. So if you are young athletic and don't want to invest too much $$ right away you could definitely skip it and just get a decent sized board like the SX151 and be just fine.

SX151 has a ton of range (handles more wind than the Door) and is a GREAT first board. The Spleene is like a big Lexus/Mercedes/Caddy for guys who want things easy and are willing to pay for it. But I would try something less expensive first, then if you love the sport and want maximum light wind ability consider the Spleene.

I'm back from Hood River. The SX 151 got me up and riding and i weigh 165. I have a nice red one in very good shape, if you're interested.

I would really recommend trying a lunacy. I'm just under 200lbs and that board is almost enough for me to use exclusively and I've heard that they may be issuing a 136? cm this year. It's wide enough to function quite well as an all-around board. Maybe Tighe can hook you up with a demo?

If you want the most agressive pop, the best flex characteristics, and the most durable board on the market the Lunacy is the way to go. It took Slingshot making this board to get Ruben to get off the other board company that sponsored him.

It does have really impressive range for its size. I was amazed to see riders in Padre riding it on lighter wind days...pretty amazing since it's only a 129 x 39.

The 09 Lunacy will come in 132 and 135 cm sizes as well. Not sure when they'll be available.

Unfortunately I don't have one for demo. I'll see maybe I can get one as a local demo. Hunter has one though it may be hard to get it out of his hands, he raves about it...probably could be convinced though.

lots of good options out there. I have the SX boards if you want to try them. A bit more of a cush/surf ride.

Check out http://myplykiteboards.com/

Good price at $175 for a board with straps... My first board that I learned on was a plywood board that I had built.

It would end up being a great light wind board too!
