Hi, everyone,
I'm going on a trip around Lake Superior with the family and would like to bring one kite and one board.
I haven't been able to find anything about launches - does anyone have some info?
I don't want to stumble into protected or self-policed launches, etc, and I'm trying to figure out if I should bring a wetsuit or drysuit.
Thanks,
johnz

riding on the big lake
While I was back home in Mn, I took a trip with my family to the Apostle Islands in Wi. Since the level of lake superior was SO low (about 1.5') there was a lot of new beaches and shallows that have started to show. I made some marks of the places we went: http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&h ... &z=10&om=1
There was wind most days but the wind in the islands is a bit tricky to predict. Definitely a lot of wind channels through many of the islands. To find the best wind it would best to have a boat.
There is so much sand, wind, and open water here I would love to spend a few weeks kiting, boating here. Having a boat is the best option, but there are still a lot of sweet spots to ride from the mainland.
When I come back from Finland ... I'm going to spend some time kiting here for sure! Kiting on the Baltic Sea is getting me ready ... big waves and cold water! Cheers to everyone i used to ride with at WBL and mille lacs ...

Thanks for the post, Matt. Glad U R doing some kiting over there! I see shots of kitesurfing Norway's coast in the mags. Hope you come back with lots of stories for us. As far as Superior goes, I hear Port Wing mentioned often.
Looking at the map, it almost looks like it would work on a W, WNW or NW
but haven't tried it myself. I also call on accounts around Ashland, and it LOOKS totally kiteable, but haven't tried it either. Wus factor, common sense, & my promise to my SWEETIE to never kite alone has stopped me from trying new locales. Hope you find some sweet new spots, Z & share your secrets with the rest of us. JRN

Only been to the Apostles once years ago (no kiting or anything else, just tourist boat cruises), but damn this was a nice place!!! We went in late August and the water off of the state park on Madeline was supposedly "warm" tho I did not do in cuz there were Euro guys in speedos and I was either grossed out or shamed away!
