My dad lives south of Clearwater. The locals meet at kite beach in Treasure Island. Public lot across from a Walgreens if I remember right. They fly all different kinds of kites including kite surfing.

We drove the Keys and stayed in Key West two years ago. The winds were light and we didn't see any kites except around Marathon. It sounds like the best kiting in Key West is out at the flats -- offshore area accessable by boat. Bahia Honda state park is beautiful --- long, undeveloped -- but I don't know if you can kite there. Hope you find warm temps and good wind.

Dianne,
I just came back from that area. I found it works best to talk with the local shops to find out when the wind will be blowing and what beach will be ideal.

Clearwater: Watersports West 888-401-5080
Spots: Ft. Desoto or Sunshine Skyway ($1 toll)

Sarasota: Island Style Watersports 941-954-1009
Spots: City Island

Ft. Meyers: Ace Performer 239-489-3513
Spots: Sanibel Causeway ($6 toll)

There were a number of Kiters at Sanibel when I was down. All these shops rent equipment (if needed) and are happy to help you out even if all you need is info. There is no local org like LAKAWA in that area so you'll need to rely on national forcasts or local knowledge. Usuable winds are normally in association with cold fronts passing through the area. Everyone is friendly, so check it out and have fun.
