does anybody know if this comes with a 5 line bar or a four line bar and if so how easy is it to attach an extra line for relaunch?
I just sent this to you as a response to your email inquiry but thought I'd add it here for others as well.
The 5th line is a complicated issue because there are so many variations of it, the good thing is that kite is set up for all of them. Here are the different 5th line options:
5th line to rear of kite
If you run a line, loose when flying, to the rear of the kite you'll be able to roll the kite end on end and get the LE facing up and ready to fly. You can attach it to the rear of one strut, to the ATL line running along the rear of the kite, or make a V bridle and attach it to two strut ends. I would suggest the ATL line if you have it. You can attach this 5th line at the bar to one bar end float with a lightweight, eg. gas station keychain variety, caribeaner. You may also want to add a 6-10ft of leader line at the bar end so that you can easily grab this line to pull to relaunch. The key thing is that this line should be loose when flying.
Pros: Easy to set up, less chance of hurting canopy than other systems, minimal chance of 5th line wrapping around kite
Cons: in extremely light winds this system may not work as well as other systems
Note: there is an All Terrain Launch (ATL) system for your kite that works on the back lines. It does pretty much everything the system above does without adding another line. When the front lines go slack, ie the kite is down, by pulling the back lines the trailing edge is pulled in and the kite will fly backwards. If you pull only one side it will roll over. Nice system.
5th line to Leading Edge of Kite.
2 versions
1) slack when flying. This line is attached to the bar in a similar fashion to the one above but attaches to the pump leash on the LE instead of the Trailing edge of the kite. This allows you to roll the kite backwards, engage a wing tip, and launch the kite.
Pros: Easy to attach, will launch your kite in the lightest of winds, can be set up to be a safety as well.
Cons: it rolls the kite onto it's canopy which can damage the canopy on sharp ice. There is also the chance of this line wrapping around the canopy if the kite rolls downwind, and if it sinches down on the canopy you're in trouble (add a break away system in case this happens).
2) Adjustable when flying. These systems bring the 5th line(attached to the LE) down through the bar to a cleat near your chicken loop and allow you to tighten the kites profile and even flatten the profile to get better performance out of the kite. This also allows you to use it as a safety so if you let go or break free from the bar the kite falls from the sky on the 5th line. All 06 and 07 kites come with this system stock.
Pros: very reliable safety, relaunches in light wind, includes a Wave Grenade Pin so if the kite wraps the canopy you can break the line and not damage the kite, allows you to change the kites performance.
Cons: Adding this system to your bar may add $100+ to the price of the kite. You are rolling the kite onto its canopy which is isn't as robust as teh LE
What do I recommend? I'd say first look into the ATL system. 4 lines are always better than 5. If one isn't easily obtainable, then just take a 5th line to the trailing edge preferably to the ATL line that runs along the TE of the kite. I think I have a line I used for this in my Garage if you want it. I used it for a 05 13m so it might just need to be shorted a bit....but then again since it attaches near the wing tip it may not even need that.
Let me know if you want me to help you set this up.
ps. I'm working through my morning coffee so if the above description is less than clear I apologize
