Ice screws
Hi:
I bought a pair of "black diamond" ice screws on e-bay. They have them at REI in Roseville MN but they run about 50-60 bucks a piece. I bought TWo ( not sure why!) for about 70 total plus shipping(4 bucks). Go to e-bay-ice climbing or otherewise midwestmountaineering. The screws are hollow inside and have a little cranck on top to secure/clip your gear and turn it. I have not used them yet but I am assuming they are fine for frozen lakes around here.
Good luck.

Yep, what works great is the Black Diamond Turbo Express Ice Screw. You want the one with the retractable knob that "locks" out of the way till needed. At least 17/22cm in length. You can get innovative and store it inside some PVC pipe attached to your spreader bar and lock it in place with a small diameter bungee with a ball on end and a length of Q-power line. The Q-power line is rigid enough to thread right through the ice screw, stretch out the bungee and pull the end ot the Q-power back up the PVC and around the ball. Works great. You want to have your ice screw with you when you are kiting.

Definitely worth checking out E-Bay. I bought one at REI last year and paid a premium – around $50. Bought a used one on ebay for $15. You can get a cheaper price if they are used...ice climbers probably don’t want to risk purchasing a used ice screw when their life hangs on it, however for our use on the lakes, a used one is fine.
I saw Pete’s innovative PVC ice screw holster last winter as well. Made one a few weeks ago. Nice to have it secured on the harness and not dangling at your side clipped to a carabineer, the points on those things are sharp!

These ones by Grivel are nice because they fold up. I use 2. One I leave at my launch and one I carry. The shortest model wrapped inside an old sock will fit in a jacket pocket. 3/4" furniture caps work well as inexpensinve caps. On snowy/windy days I attach 3' of florescent tape (available at hardware stores, for surveyors) to the one I leave at my launch. I lost one $50 screw because it was covered up by wind driven snow and disappeared.

Some pictures of my setup. PVC attached to spreader bar with multiple Zip Ties.

cheap
there are some russian titanium ice screws you can fiind online for about 15 bucks.
I guess the stuff I use is called "Flagging Tape". I get it at the local True Value. Easy to spot, flutters in the wind. Rips off in a second if you want to take it off everytime you use it.I would like to get a little debate about kite parking edict. . I have almost run over my own screw. I would really feel bad if someone ripped the edge off there board because I didn’t clearly mark it.

Ive been searching the net for cheap russian screws but it seems theys topped selling them.
I then went looking for used screws, and on a climbing forum someone is selling:
I asked and he said 50 bucks shipped for everything. I only need 2, who wants the extras? I have to send him a check.

I was new to kite boarding this summer, and looking forward to my first snow kiting season this winter. I am going to ask a very naive question: What exactly do you use the ice screws for? I assume it is to anchore the kite down while you are preparing to launch, but I wanted to confirm exactly how.
