12m Ranger Review!

Post by Hunter Welles »

Last sunday I got to take a 12m Ranger from Jeff at the expo to go test it out riding down south. I headed down there with Nate, one of Nathan Bs friends who just bought an 8m ozone. We got to a bean feild in owatonna about 11:30. it had the most cover that we had found, but really it was 3-4 inches of slushier stuff with some bare spots or 1-2 foot drifts, I layed out the COLORED LINES(all rangers will have colored lines) and set up the kite(no pumping up the ranger!) and was out riding as fast as I could be.

Heres a link so you can see the wind that I was riding-
http://www.wunderground.com/history/air ... atename=NA

After setting up and self launching the ranger, I headed down wind for some better snow conditions down there. It was blowing 20-25 with gusts up to 30 or so, and where we were there was a pretty big patch of trees the made it a lot gustier than we had hoped for. I was very powered on the 12 at the time, im only about 145 pounds, but once I pulled the adjustment strap in a little bit, the kite was very managable and a lot of fun in that wind. I was playing around getting used to the feel for it, and it was a very stable kite, not too fast turning, but reminded me a lot of my 17.5 machine, but a little faster turning. After getting comfertable with the kite, I got some speed up and in a lull, just sent it back for the first jump. I wasnt expecting much because I heard it was going to be the lower aspect of the two(9m and 12m), but all the sudden i was just smoothly lifted off and brought to about 10 feet in the air, then came down again nice and slow. The thing had a lot of lift, but not in the poppy fuel kinda way, but much smoother. It also had a really lofty air, I cant wait to go try things thing off a good hill or kicker or something, you could get some really nice hang times with it. After getting used to it I started jumping more and more in the gusts and everything else and got some of the biggest, or possibly the biggest jumps ive had. And this was in conditions where really there wasnt much of an edge and I couldnt gain too much speed. In comparison with my fuels again, I sent this one a little further back in the window, and just slowly steered it back in the air. I never had any problems with it folding over or anything like while I was in the air(an experience that scared me away from riding foils when I first started jumping). Other than that, the kite looked really good in the air and had a good smooth power. It also could handle the gusts really well even in some of the more gusty winds I have ridden in.

At the end of the first session, my legs were getting pretty tired and I started to play around with the saftey system/relaunch on the kite. If you look at the bar, you attach your leash to the black line going between the two outside lines on the kite. When I went to go release the bar, immediately killed the kite and slowly went down backwards to where it was sitting there cells up ready to go. On the ground there was little or no resistence from the kite. This was really nice because you could do things like strap yourself in or get yourself ready with the kite just killed like this on the ground. Then, once I was ready again, I just pulled in the bar and it popped right back up into the air again. What really amazed me about it was the relaunch. I crashed it face down, then just pulled the black line in to about my chest, the kite just picked up into the air, and flipped over, landed sitting with the cells up on the ground, but wouldnt go until you are ready and release the black line. Once I decided to go and take a break, I was very far down wind, but after after pulling the adjustment strap in a little more, the kite went out further to the side of the windown and had great upwind. I was back at my starting spot in just 4 short tacks.

After coming in took a short break, then went back out into the consistently dying wind. I went back down wind and played around. The kite still could pull me into the air without problem and I was having some fun jumps, but then it really started to drop off. I started heading back up wind quickly, but right as I got back up the wind just completely dropped off at about 3:30.

My overall opinion of the kite is that it was a lot of fun, and instead of being a good begginer kite or up at the cabin kite, it was a really fun, super easy to set up and use, great snow and land kite that will work just as well as many of the LEIs on the snow, if not better!

Unfortuantely my camera was broken so I couldnt take any pics, but for those of you who havent seen them, heres some pics that I found off the internet.

Nice review Hunter...it looks a lot like a Frenzy and has the same back line relaunch and safety. My understanding is it's cheaper than the Frenzys
so that makes it good value too....even if it is a SS.

Standard Retail Pricing is:

Slingshot
9m Ranger $799
12m Ranger $899

Ozone
10m Frenzy $1130
12m Frenzy $1270

You are correct both kites come from similar designs. Most of the differences you will see in the bar.

I don't know if the frenzy has this feature but the Ranger has a Velcro pocket on the sides for the bridles when you pack it up. Our very own Alex Peterson put his energy into this kite last year. I thought SS should have done something last year but they nailed it with the price and performance of this kite. They wanted a stable flying kite but still making it a good smooth jumper. Who else knows what MN needs than the guy that put Minneapolis on the map for snowkiting. Send it AP!

The Ozones have a velcro tab on the leading edge in the middle of the kite where you can anchor your lines so the bridles don't tangle. Both wing tips or middle are a nice feature to make set up as fast as possible by avoiding tangles...ugh.

I am going back to my roots this winter in light air. I started snow kiting in the late 90's on foils, and my favorites were the Flexifoil Blades. I will be flying a 10.5 Flexifoil Blade III, which is notorious for being one of the most powerful kites around. Following some die-harders on Kiteforum, I have modified the kite so that it is fully sheetable.

For lighter air, I think a nice, powerful foil is tough to beat on snow. They are light and efficient, and they are soooo easy to set up and put away.

One the wind picks up, I will jump back on an inflatable, which is still the clear winner (over foils) for thoroughbred performance (except maybe for Flysurfers).

Hey, that's just great. Finally, a sheetable foil at a realistic pricepoint! I'd love a quiver of Ozones, but ...(insert a smartass remark about prying open wallets, etc.) Does Larry have'em in stock? I'd like a demo you denizens of all things foilable. Hope I can bum a ride this winter! JN

Great review Hunter. Very thorough. Your inclusion of the wind graph and your weight were very benefitial. I've only flown the 9m on land though I'm stoked to try it in the next day or two down here...just for kicks on water.

For those interested, at the expo last weekend Midwest Moutaineering had these kites on sale for over a hundred off the prices listed above. I'd suggest giving Peter Noreen a call and seeing if he'll still swing that deal. I think the 9m was at $649.

After talking to riders like Steve Blaine, who ride both, I'm stoked to try some of the newer foils. My experience is 3-4 years old and at the time the feel just didn't compare to my tube kites. It sounds like they've ccontinued to evolve considerably. The new Ozones look sweet, the Ranger looks sweet, the Blade III is gaining a good rep...I'm stoked to get some experience with these new foils.

Thanks again Hunter for such a thorough review.

Jim..say it ain't so, you got rid of big pink?
Regardless of brand I have always enjoyed foils in the winter, setup and take down is fast. The new 4 line foils maybe don't have quite the same depower as a bow but it's not far off. For my taste the 06 frenzies have more depower than I want on snow. My favourite feature is the ability to park the kite on the brake and it will just stay where it's put. Riding wise they still turn a little slower but have very predictable behaviour and give plenty good performance. There is no doubt you can usually get them in the air in lighter wind than a blimp.
I like the idea of more lines holding the shape of the kite when I jump over a hard surface, makes me feel more secure .My favourite analogy is if it's a safe enough design to jump out of a plane with, it's a safe enough design to hoist my old butt over a hard lake.
This year Naish, North have come up with new foils, there's a new company called HQ kites that has a ranger/frenzy design thats even more competitively priced.Slingshot has the new Ranger, Ozone has tweeked the frenzy and has a new high aspect kite the manta, Flysurfer has tweeked the cool and the speed, flexifoil has tweeked the blade as they have been doing for years.Peter Lynn still has nice kites, The Blade and Frenzy have to be the two kites that have had the most development over the years. So all said and done a lots going in Foil land, a snow kiter is spoiled for choice. It does seem there is a foil design for every taste and price point.Pretty cool.

All this talk about foils is making me regret the end of the water season. However, I have one thing to look forward to this winter... and that is my Flexifoil Sabre that I got super cheap brand new. Anybody have any comments on this particular kite? I have yet to fly it.

ICE, I have the same kite 9.5m. I like it alot. The cells have a mesh over the leading edge open end to keep snow and ice out. The bar has a spinning leash, the bag is backpack quality, they have velcro straps on the TE for the bridals. The kite is really well built with color coded lines, Rostan pulleys, carbon bar, I also got a rediculously good deal on this $1200 kite.

I got a 12 meter 2007 Frenzy for 1100.00 at the Midwest Mountaineering expo. This kite will hopefully keep me going for years to come. I prefer foil design to inflatables all the way!
