Stay connected in the wind. This forum is for anyone who rides the wind, winter or summer, on whatever board suits their fancy. Share the stoke, find out where people are going, ask any question, share your discoveries, and discuss any esoteric idea you may have related to the pursuit of wind. Please keep it positive.
The concern is not windsurfers, its bystanders. The moment you put a kite in the air, there will be zillion of curious onlookers. Great for the ego boost but nasty if the kite crashed on or near one of them. Espceially since you will have to come close to shore to launch and land.
In the winter you can have at it cause you can launch from the middle of the lake. Less pedestrian traffic too.

the lake is simple way to small for water kiting to work, too many obstacles obstructing the wind, creating very gusty on off conditions, it would basically suck even if you did get out, there is a reason no one kites there.
Just ask Alex Peterson about the gusty conditions at Calhoun/Harriet. A few years back there was a very close call. He was hit by a monster gust next to shore and was pulled over a handrail and slammed into on of the buildings. Joe was just talking about it last week and said when he seen it happen the thought he was dead. I would have to say that Alex’s flying skills are something that only we could dream about. The Lake is extremely fluky and can change in a heartbeat. I fly Calhoun in the winter when the wind is a little smoother because you can walk out as far as you like. I would not wish Harriet on my worst enemy. The lake is in a hole. Its worth the 20-30 minute drive to WBL or the Wac. Just my 2 cents.

I have many calhouns stories as some of you know when I started in the late 90s I had no idea of where else to ride. So I learned kiting at calhoun. I have several reasons why not to ride I will only give you one.
If you go riding and for some reason you drop your kite in the water. LuLs tend to happen due to the area. One of the many hundreds off people will call the cops in concern for your safety. All of a suden you will have fire trucks ambulance, park cops etc. You know as well as I do we are ok, but they wont know that. This happened to me the last 5 times I was on Calhoun years ago. They so wanted to write me some sort of ticket, lets not give them a reason to start bringing the wrong attention to our sport.
