Many of the guys from Rochester head to Pepin (SE, E, W and NW, or Byllesby (W) or Cannon (S or SW) on windy days (see Lakes section). You are in a good region of the state. Byllesby's magic capet ride is very sweet. Pepin can go off like the Gorge. While these lakes offer some great riding if you are willing to travel a bit there are many other great spots around the state and in Iowa.

Tighe gave you the "low down" on what's available with 1 hour of Rochester. I sail mostly Pepin because it is down the street. Get yourself a dry suit if you don't already have one because some, if not most, of the great fall days happen when the temps start to plummet. Also, Rochester seems to be windy when it really isn't at many lakes, I learned that after burning lots of 1/2 days of vacation. So, get the specifics of the local wind readings or do what I did and get yourself working the graveyard shift.

Hey, Sasha, welcome. Tighe and Pete have steered you straight. The most accurate readings on south winds at Cannon are from the Owatonna airport, ten miles south of the lake. West winds at Lake Byllesby can be gauged directly from readings at nearby Stanton airport. As Pete will tell you, southeast or northwest winds at Pepin are harder to read since the lake is in a deep river valley and the local weather stations do not accurately represent lakeside conditions. If there is a strong southeast flow ahead of a low pressure system developing in South Dakota, Pepin is often worth the drive. When in doubt contact Pete for a local update: he reads the wind on Pepin by looking out his back door.
Hope to see you on the water this fall!
