There are some polo fields out SW of Long Lake. I've never been there though I've heard they can be pretty good. I'd still venture out on the lakes. They have to be pretty thick still. I might hammer some nails in some boards for claws, to carry with me just in case.
fingers crossed for one last session in the white.

Steve and I were on Cedar in WI until tuesday. and would have been out yesterday, would that there was wind. despite receeding from the shore and needing hip boots or a boat to reach the ice, it was still 12" thick. the downside is the continued honeycombing that deepens each day the sun has a shot at it. the ice safety debate in my head reminds me of the ice thickness safety discussions here last fall. the buddy system and some claws seems the best advice.
Eric, John and I kited there once early last year. If you are desperate, it will work, but it is not very big. Plus, I don't think the snow base will be very good with what we are getting. I think I might try the ice. Jerry and Eric were out on Lake Washington on Wed.. Eric said the ice was pretty thick.
The polo field is SW of Maple Plain. Eric might remember where it is.

Ummmm....... I got chased off of those polo fields last summer when I showed up with my buggy..... wonderful day for about an hour with a 3.5M Gamma, then this Bolivian Polo Pony guy named Jesus, or Juan, or something definatly Bolivian shows up riding his Big lawnmower and I was afraid he was gonna run over my kite (which I had politely landed)... but he stopped well down wind and walked up and asked just who "exactly" gave me permission to use the field.... Ummmmm......
Anyway, he said I was spooking the horses when they went out for their mid day trot around the block, and that next time I should have the guy who is a "member" of the club call ahead and set up a time, so they can adjust their horsie schedule...... Nice fella, actually.... He said since I was already there, and the damage was done, I could just as well stay awhile....

Yeah, I was out there one day when they were running dogs on the grounds. I talked to some cool people there but got the impression that this is privately owned club grounds. There's lots fo suff that happens in the summer-fall.
If we want to kite there we need to get involved with the dues payers I would guess.
Sneaking a kite session in the winter might be OK but fuc, just go to a lake.
