Calhoun-Park Board Activities

Post by paul g »

Apparently, the Linden Hills Neighborhood Couoncil has arranged for the Calhoun Sailing Club to make presentations of its proposals for development on the south shore of the lake Jan. 26 and Feb. 14. See details at http://www.lindenhills.org/calhoundevel.htm

Also, the following appeared in the Jan. 21 Hill & Lake Press:

RED FLAG OVER LAKE
CALHOUN!
By Natalie Westreich
On December 6, 2005, a neighborhood meeting was
held at the Linden Hills Rec. Center. Park
Commissioners Bob Fine, Annie Young, and Mary
Merrill Anderson were present: one of the publicized
purposes of this meeting was to discuss the issues surrounding
the proposed Yacht Club facility on the south
east shore of Lake Calhoun. It was interpreted, by the
chairperson of the group that the discussion would be
limited to the process of decision making and of devel-
oping collegiality. It was indicated by one of the attending
commissioners that no proposal had been made that
he knew of. In the crush of frustrated attendees that
occurred immediately after the meeting, it was determined
that indeed there have been three proposals
being discussed by the Yacht Club, and that one has
been proposed. The proposals, as I understand them,
range from a small building to house equipment, similar
to what is now on site on the NE corner of Lake
Calhoun, to five separate two-story buildings, which
would include an "event center" and retail space.
According to minutes from an ECCO Board meeting, a
presentation was made to the Park Board requesting the
five building option. The Lake Calhoun Yacht Club
people indicated that they would put information about
their proposal(s) on their website; as yet that has not
occurred. An article describing the proposal was published
in the December Hill & Lake Press. An excerpt
of that article was e-mailed to Commissioner Fine on
January 3 asking for his comments. He responded
January 12 indicating that he had been out of town. In
his response he indicated that there were inaccuracies but
did not specify what was inaccurate. I am hoping
that further communications will clear up this question.
Commissioner Fine also indicated that there has been
discussion of a large Yacht Club facility, but that there
is no proposal in any committee or to the Board. While
I am pleased that we now have at least a bit of communication
concerning a Yacht Club facility on the SE
shore of Cake Calhoun, the previous lack of information/
communication should certainly put up a "red
flag". Why is it that "no one know:; anything" about a
proposal that apparently has been discussed for
months-or perhaps years? So please-write to your Park
Commissioners about this very important issue of
maintaining our heritage-our green space-our wonderful
parkland!
