It's not every day, or any day for that matter, that surfing gets the top story in the Star Tribune. OK, it's not the print paper, but it's still the top story.
This was in my print paper this morning. FRONT PAGE!
The whole time I was reading the article I was thinking to myself...
"Why can't I kite it in the winter?"
Anyone have commentary as to if they've tried kiting/windsurfing Superior in the winter? Can it be done? Hmm, a dry suit, a good hood, booties, and lots of vaseline? Call Red Bull.
Randy and Ryan have probably pushed it the furthest, at least for windsurfing, don't know about kiting this time of year.
I've been up there with Randy when the water was just about freezing and the air temp was pretty close to the same temp. He's probably been up there in even colder temps.
You stay pretty warm moving around like we do, but I can't imagine sitting in the water for the time those surfers do, in even colder temps, and staying even reasonably warm and limber! Holy crap...
yeah it seems pretty unreal. The only thing I can imagine is that the water warms (relatively speaking) the first 5-10 ft of surface air. Did you see the steam in the one shot? I just can't imagine being out in below zero temps. Even at freezing and working my buns off windsurfing highwinds I get cold after a short session.
The vaseline is a great trick though. I've put it on my face before and it really helps. Looks pretty gross, specially if you have a beard though in those temps it ain't about fashion.
