where to go

Post by Tighe »

Right now ( and that could change) it looks like the biggest snowfall amounts will be to the south with over a foot predicted for some areas....yipeee!

Now to figure out where to go. East is a tricky wind direction. Obviously Pepin would be epic. Other than that I'm not sure of good spots on an easterly south of the cities. Cannon really bites on an east with the hill on the east side of the lake. Byllsby is pretty narrow, but could create a venturi off the bluffs.

There are a few lakes to the west of Cannon that run East/ west. Has anyone checked them out?

With that much snow any huge farm field should work.

hmm.

Does anybody know if the ice is still safe/solid on Pepin? I'm going to be in Red Wing all weekend and would like to get out.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but Bellaire should be quite good tomorrow. Plenty of snow around here, and the wind direction is great for that lake. Travel won't be quick tomorrow. Hope some of you can make it out there in the late morning to join me.

Hey Mike, I was thinking the same thing! Why travel when it's right in our back yard!

I plan on being at the bear sometime late morning. See ya out there!

I'll be there in the afternoon. Bellaire rocks on an easterly!

Yee-fricken'-ha! :-)

Regarding Lake Pepin, I just talked to a guy who told me there was open water in the channel north of Lake City, about 700 yards in length. The lake in front of Lake City is still ice all the way across. Safe...who knows? We kited 2 winters ago at Cannon when there was open water in the middle. There may be plenty of decent ice in the bay at Lake City...but who's to tell how safe it is?

I like your broken record Mike. There were trucks out on the ice in front of Bellaire last night so it's safe.... Hope I can sneak out after work...if not definitely Saturday.

1 more fur d'Bear

Post by Jim N »

Looks like she'll grow some fur after noon today. There's still a little residual fuzz left from last weekend. Should be able to groom that white coat with some nice sharp edges! Man, this metaphor is growing ever so tedious. You guys must bring out the "English Major" in me, YAWN.

Hmmmm, it is not even snowing in WBL right now. Tighe or Chris, how would that little lake by Buck Hill work today? Didn't you say east was good there? How about access?

Anyone still thinking about Faribault. I will consider it at this point.

The lake across from buck would only work for a straight east wind.

Kite Island is the call for us West siders. Anyone know for sure that the road is still safe (for trucks)?

That lake near buck is really narrow. 5 kites would be a crowd. Don't think the snow would be much better there than here.

I'm thinking checking Cannon or Tetonka further west,

Just a couple miles farther south of Buck hill is Marion and for kiting, an easterly is maybe the best direction. If you drive across the lake from the launch, you can set up behind a point just like kite island or the launch at byllesby. The east wind comes right down the lake and there are no hills to the east so it is not to bad. It is a bit small but not too bad.

This morning it was snowing pretty good in apple valley but by the time i hit 394 there wasn't a flake in sight so there could be a lot more snow even that close.

:? I think I am going to Cannon. They must have about 9 inches of snow  by now, they had 7 at 7 am. We had a great session last year there in 8 inches and very little wind at sunset.. 8) ..It was a west wind that day...
You need bigger wind to pull you in the deep stuff. Fly high and land soft today where ever you go...
