Now or never
OK guys, this is it. We keep talking about coming up and trying out a fall session on the south shore, this is YOUR BIG CHANCE!
So Far, two of us are attending – who else is coming? Keep in mind that the water temperature is IN THE UPPER 50’S so don’t be intimidated by air temperature. We regularly sail for another month – just spending some time in the water warms you up. Plus, the air blowing across the lake will keep the air temp a good 10 degrees higher than any forecast you’ll see for the area.
I expect to see AT LEAST 6 people there right? Come on guys – this is your big shot.
West End Lake Superior Forcast:
SAT
NW WIND TO 30 KT INCREASING TO GALES TO 40 KT. RAIN AND SNOW
SHOWERS. WAVES BUILDING TO 12 TO 17 FT.

Directions -
From I-35 in Duluth - take I-535 South to US 2 and US 53 south.
Take US 2/US 53 south about 8 miles
Take Exit WI-13 County Road Z, take WI-13 East.
Follow WI-13 36 miles.
At fire side of town in Port Wing, Turn Left to follow signs to lake / harbor access. We will probably be launching from "the Marina" - a small builidng right near the bridge when you get to the lake. - or at the break wall.
Note with wind will still be blowing on Sunday too.

Amazing!!
Now that's a forecast. I get queezy in the stomach just thinking about it. I think the biggest I've ever sailed Superior was 10-12'. The prospect of 17' waves with my 3.7M will have to be in my dreams this weekend. Deeply committed to an all weekend workshop, but please document this one for the records since it looks to be the most extreme session so far.
Ride...just be it!

The east half forecast is up to 50 knots with 15 to 20 foot seas. We won’t see anything like that in Port Wing because we only have about 20 miles of fetch.
I went to school in Houghton MI on the east half of the lake on the Keweenaw Peninsula. I didn’t have adequate neoprene to get out in those conditions while I was there, but I thought about it a whole bunch. At Houghton, there is a state park with RV spots (for heated RV’s?), several miles of beach and a breakwater for ships coming out of the Keweenaw waterway. The NW winds come side on-shore and at the breakwater, you have the lake, 100 yards of beach, then flat water inside. You could sail inside in flat water or you could start in the flat water and actually reach out through the entry into the waves without tacking. It’s an amazing place in a W or NW wind at this time of year.

As for Sunday, for now anyway, the forecast is still for gales, decreasing through the day.

NW GALES TO 45 KT WITH A FEW STORM FORCE GUSTS TO 50 KT
IN THE EVENING. RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. WAVES 20 TO 25 FT.
Have Fun Brothers!!

Some Answers:
I looked at the water temps earlier today. You can access them through the marine forecast tab on the National Weather Service Site for Duluth. The Satellite images indicate water temps in the 35 to 55 degree range today. However, there is little wind and the surface is relatively calm so the surface water is being cooled by the air. I would expect water to be about 55 degrees with it being mixed up, etc..
Kiting:
I think it is an ideal spot for kiting. The wind will be about 45 degree side on-shore with a beach similar to Park Point. The beach and bay are about 2 miles long with the wind coming in at an angle. We will NOT be sailing out of this bay.
Waves:
Yes, the waves can get to 25 feet. Actually, they can get a bit higher than that. Here is a link to a animated wave height prediction page -http://www.crh.noaa.gov/grr/marine/waveForecast.php
With the amount of fetch we will see at Port Wing, the wave will only be about 6 feet.

I have heard that highway 13 is now open…
The usual suspects around here seem to missing in action this weekend – I’m trying to pull in another player to come over with me. Not the kind of sailing I care to do by myself. He wants to hit the road a bit later - when you guys are headed through Duluth, give me call (cell 218-348-5114).. I hope to be in Port Wing early afternoon.
I even bought one of those disposable waterproof camera’s for the occasion!
Professor – if you read the whole thread you will notice in small print not to expect waves over 6 feet. That marine forecast stuff is off shore and further down the lake. BUT THE WIND will be there! I just checked around the lake and the wind has already gone NW and is into the 20's and building..
Make a quick check of the near shore forecast, west end open water forecast and the wind conditions at Devils Island from the Marine weather tab of the Duluth NWS site before you go. For fun, you could check the west end data bouy as well, I noticed it hasn't been taken out for the season yet - it will give you real wave heights and water temps. I don’t see any way this could possibly flop, but I would never want you guys doing all that driving on my word alone.

Brian. Sorry, I am back out again. My dad is coming to town on a no notice visit and my wife will actually KILL me if I ditch out and leave her to hang out with him.
Sunday is my only hope and the forecast doesn't look so great anymore.
I have some vacation I have to burn so maybe another good storm will blow through.
