Frustrated

Post by Eric S »

This is the second time I've tried to download and view Alex clip "wow.avi". I've yet to see it.

What media player/codec's will work for this vid?

I suggest all the producers agree on a common cross platform standard for final outupt.

Any thoughts?

sorry eric, no idea what it was made with. Works fine on my mac, which surprised me since it is an .avi file. Quicktime launches in Explorer for me.

Keep trying it is a sweet one.

Worked fine for me, although I first download it and then view it, rather than view/download at same time. Win2000 SP3, viewed with Windows Media Player 7.x

since you brought it up Eric, what would you suggest as the preferred format? I can put a note on the Movies page. Whatever is the most compatable and has the best compression.

I would suggest .mpg format as the most cross compatable.

I'm using windows media player 7 as well kirk, must be my machine.

The whole AV thing is still in a state of flux. Codecs get better and better. I guess I should just be greatfull that folks are trying to produce somthing rather than bitching!

Thanks!

what is the advantage of mpg over Quicktime? I obviously would rather use Quicktime because it is made by the best computer company in the world (versus satan himself behind an amazing marketing department). I will suggest mpg if there are significant differences.

It's a standard. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/MPEG.html

It theory, we should use standards (like HTML) on the internet so we can "talk" to eachther. In practice, most of the cool stuff starts from propritary ideas that might make it into the standard.

I, like you, don't want to be forced to use a particular propritary piece of hardware or software to "get the job done". That's kind of a eutopia but I belive we should work in that direction.

...just my opinions

ok in fear of sounding real dumb....is mpeg the same as mpg? like Jpeg and jpg?

Sounds like a good standard. Not to discourage people I think we should keep it in the form of a preference for video submissions.

yes mgp = mpeg

I was thinking alittle more and I thought that folks should just post. we need more of that rather than worrying about formats.

It runs on my win98 windows media player 7.01. It's really a good video. Too bad you can't see it.

GSpot says it is a MJPG movie running under a microsoft directshow filter, not a codec. I'm not sure how I got directshow. I think I installed microsoft directx for my TV tuner video card.
