Here's a good place to start:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&l ... indsurfing

My folks spend the winters down there. Dad has seen some kitemares (kites landing in high tension powerlines (snap, crakle, POP). He also says he sees windsurfers down there from his place.

It's really sweet down there but wind is mostly frontal. Me and my brother have done some bonefishing down there and we pray for no wind. This was before I learned how to windsurf. Here's some pics of a tirp http://www.spottke.com/eric/keywest/ . We stay at the Bonefish Resort on Marathon Key http://www.bonefishresort.com/

You could launch right out your back door if you stayed here. The direction looking out over the water is South so it might not be as good in the winter (the big winds are more north) but that doesn't mean you could drive about a mile and and find another spot to lauch.

You might check out Ohio Key too

We did alot of fishing on the Flats but there are some cool spots to launch from.

I'd Really consider a longboard if I went. Just cruising around in 5-10mph you could see some wild stuff. There's so much sealife in the shallows.

have fun,

:) Thanks Eric for all the information. Very helpful. I'm tossing around a road trip to the Keys or possibly Texas coast area. I've sailed off the Sanibel/Captiva Islands in the Gulf, but never any Texas. The key thing is I'm driving; otherwise, I'd pick somewhere like Bonaire or Aruba. Thanks again.

I am planning to be there in beggining of April, so I did some research too. March and April are usually very windy down there, with mostly south-east or north-east direction.
Islamorada seems to be the most flexible place to launch. YOu can launch from Holiday Isla hotel with any wind direction.
http://www.floridakeyswindsurfing.com/ seems to be the only big place to get equipment but if you are driving you can bring your own.
For other places to sail try http://www.sfbsa.com/.

when are you going to be there?
