Sail stored needs tension at all three corners or else damag

Post by Quetzalcoatl »

If you keep windsurf sails rigged up (and ready to go) and stored away in the garage or in the cabin,

be sure all three corners of the sail is pretty much equally tensioned. My big sails won't fit inside the cabin
ground floor door...so in the past I have released the outhaul completely and then roll up gently the clue a little
and then push in the tail of the boom in a few inches and then I easily slipped through the door my 7.7 meter sail.
I'd leave the sail in that condition...(boom pushed in a bit) and tension completely released at the clue. Only tension was
at the head and the tack. Thus only two corners of the sail had tension.

Well, One day I started to take out my 7.7 sail and soon discovered that the tack corner of sail was all ripped up!!
I concluded and I summized and I figured out...mmmmmm the sail NEEDs tension at all three points if I'm going to
leave the sail rigged. Now I know why my 6.9 meter sail had the head ripped off a year earlier when it was stored in the same way with tension at two points (two corners)..
So, keep those sails equally tensioned at all three corners of the sail! Oh,,now what I do is: once I get the big sail through the door...then before I leave it (mast on floor) tail of boom pointing up...I do pull out the boom tail a bit and tension some outhaul. The next time, (before I drag sail out of cabin) I have to release outhaul and push in tail. It's a bit of a pain...but it works! I always have my 7.4 Loft sail "pretty much" rigged and ready to go...with just having to do a few minor adjustments every time.

Might be a good idea to loosen the downhaul tension also during storage. Keeping the mast under constant pressure may cause issues and probably not good for the sail to be stretched in any direction for extended periods of time. Glad you have space to store it out of the sun.
