Snow fence for making drifts

Post by Matt V »

This is the second time I tried the snow fence idea to make some drifts and this time we got enough snow for it to work! We only got about 3" of powder over no base so we were stuck on short grass. Even the lakes around here are pretty much SwitchBlade only since they blew off too.

But at the end of the session on Tuesday, we put up 2 - 15' to 20' sections of snow fence with 3 "T-posts" on each section (6 posts total) lightly pounded into the ground with a t post driver. When we showed up on Wednesday, we had something to play on! If it was not for the ramps, the terrain would have been boring as usual. This is a great spot for terrain and gliding when we get enough snow to cover the terraces and deep grass.

1min, 31sec short video

We let the guinea pig go out first on a 7m to see if the wind was too punchy for us, then we traded off a m5 9.5m and one guy wound up on a M6 12.5m as it got close to dark. No need for the 14m's that day. The other 2 guys got banged up, but I played it safe and only got scrunched on the one attempted double in the video. The butt pad saved 1 broken tail bone for one guy. I wish we had the snow down here in Omaha that you have up in Minneapolis. Then we could be kiting on terrain instead of mowed grass. And I am sure we would have felt a bit better the next day. Or maybe worse, but happier.

Discarded Christmas trees make great places to start snow drifts and they are "organic."
