The Bear Delivered!

Post by jrjohnson1 »

Drove out to White Bear Lake this afternoon to check out surface conditions since the metro area received two dustings of snow the last couple of days. Wasn't expecting to see much but mostly bare ice. Boy did I get a pleasant surprise! :D To my amazement the Mahtomedi side of the lake had about 80% snow coverage with 1 foot drifts scattered about the surface. Quickly I pumped up my 16 meter and rode for about 2 hours fully powered and had excellent edging ability on my skis; all while grinning ear to ear and the sun shinning. What an incredible day and a great way to start off the snowkiting season! Nearly the whole time I kept thinking to myself, "Anybody who lives in Minnesota and complains about the winter just doesn't know how to live." The ice fishermen were out in full force as well and smiling big. Per their observations, the lake currently has 6-8 inches of ice. Can't wait until the next windy day!

Fabrino, last week I arrived at Swede about 1 hour before you did, you probably saw my tracks at the launch. I didn't stick around though once I realized the surface was all ice. After leaving the lake I stopped and checked out the same field you ended up riding at (based on the picture you posted in the other thread). After deciding the snow cover & terrain looked suitable to me, I went to the farm house at the end of the road but the farmer refused to let me ride the field, even when I offered to sign a liability waiver. Lucky for you, he must have not noticed you riding the field after refusing me permission.
