Are the metro lakes safe (newbie)

Post by jamescarlyle »

Hi

I'm not quite a newbie (kiting on the lakes here since 2001) but I'm from the UK and not a regular. Are the metro lakes Calhoun and Nikomis safe to kite on at the moment (even if there is no snow)?
I've used skates before, but about 7 years ago in December, when the ice was smooth.

Are there any better spots within 1 hour of Bloomington? I'm only here for a week and don't want this to be the first year in 11 with no kiting.

Thanks
James

Hi James,

The city lakes are safe, but skating is difficult. You can skate around Isles in the melted tracks where they plowed for the X-C race which was cancelled. Off the track the surface is very rough. You might find snow to the east in Wisconsin.

Many thanks - I'll still take care, obviously. I'm trying to find a pair of nordic skates for use on the uneven ice.

James -

I have a pair of nordic skates that are mounted with downhill ski boot bindings that I would be willing to sell to you. Super fast and much more forgiving on rough ice than hockey skates.
