Cabrinha Custom Kiteboard: Anyone have any feedback ?

Post by Geo »

So apparently these are for more aggressive riding, and not suited for freeride stuff, which I guess I don't totally know what that means. I'm into doing stuff that gets me wet and into crashes fairly often, so maybe that's me.
A 140 x 42 would be pretty wide, but the rocker and the curved side rails mean that it probably wouldn't shoot upwind a lot. I've got a 134x40 for the high wind days that is potentially similar (stiff, curvy) that I like.

Anyone have any feedback about how wakestyle boards like this practically work for around here with our 8-25 conditions?

2010 Cabrinha Custom Kiteboard:
Developed with wakestyle king, Andre Phillip, the 2010 Custom is arguably one of the best shapes in kiteboarding today. An all new flex pattern offers straight line tracking and insane pop so hitting kickers and sliders or throwing down 3s is a piece of cake. The 3D bottom shape focuses the concave at the extreme tips with a flatter center section. This places the bite where you need it and allows for finless riding on flat water or obstacles.

Also, they're on sale.

My alter ego, "MR.CHEAPO," tried using a wakeboard for a kiteboard when he first kited on water. Despite the addition of heelside edge fins, the darn thing would not edge upwind, we think because of all the rocker. I know that LF has been making finless wakeboards for years, and the price is usually around 1/2 of what we're paying for basically the same thing, a shaped blank with inserts covered with glass. Is it limited supply vs. demand? I doubt any recreational eqp. mfgrs. are getting fat in this economy regardless. The concave ends with a flat midsection sound like an interesting concept...reminds me of my first wife. No wait, it was a convex midsection, & flat ends!

I know Dave T has one and I think he likes it. I'm sure it likes to be powered with the amount of channeling and rocker it has. That said it still has to be more efficient that a wakeboard.

I have the custom and Caliber both. The custom has allot of rocker so doesn't go up wind as well unless your riding in chop or big water. that is the only downfall about the board, however the tradeoff gives you a board that lands super soft and is good in chop. also fun for the more surfy twin tip riding. All around I prefer the caliber as it does everything well, the custom is a close 2nd. Your more than welcome to take mine for a ride. It has good pop and a real solid feel to the board.

I've been riding my "old" Custom 133 for awhile. Looks like they've added channels and widened the tips but the rocker is still the same. Upside - great in chop, soft landings, very "surfy", and the board does not feel big in the upper wind ranges. Downside - more rocker = less top end speed and if the wind is up and down it won't stay on a plane and keep moving as well as a less wake-style board. I love mine and I'm thinking of trying out the 2010 140cm as well.

Thanks, guys. Like anything else, probably hafta try it for a while to get the subtleties. May smaller and bigger boards will likely take up the slack. We'll see. If it is fun, you'll know, and I'll be crashing just as much as usual.

Just rode the new 2012 custom in a 140 in Maui with Dre signature Ronix One boots. Setup was a titch too big for me but all in all super solid. As a wakestyle board it is made for choppy conditions like on the inside at kitebeach Maui or your favorite local lake around here. Board is heavier than most wakestyle boards but weight helps with ease in chop and any splash. Basically you cant go wrong.

Hey Mac,

DId you get to fly the new 2012 kites while you were there ? The new bar and quick release systems for 2012 look interesting along with the new line up of kites. The custom is for sure a solid board to have, mine is a 144 with the Ronix boots as well. The boots are very low profile but Im not sold on them for the kiteboard. love the boots on the wakeboard behind the boat.

I own the 2010 Custom 140.

I have been very impressed with it thus far. I weigh 220 and when the wind is rip'n I love it.

The board is extremely great in chop and the upwind ability is suprisingly (in my opinion) very good.

I have received face spray in maybe under a handful of scenarios...mostly due to user error.

The rocker is great in waves makes for easy landings.

The board is torsionally stiff so it drives a hard edge but flexible longitudinally to take on the waves. If it was stiff, it would be terrible in chop.

The one thing I will say is I am normally 2 sizes higher in kites than everyone else when riding it. You definitely want to ride that board lit to the gills to enjoy its potential. If you have seen Andre (or any freestyler for that matter) they ride lit face all the time.

I am a full supporter and will advise the board to anyone. Just took the fins off and going to ride it fin less......too bad that day is not today.

One last thing I forgot. The boards when setting digs super hard and you really take a sharp and quick edge for launching.

I guess two things: Must remain powered.

Yep - 144 - its a nice board - but still learning and I get really frustrated on it and have a hard time riding upwind where I've tried some other boards and I have much more success. I don't think its good for the style of riding I would do anyways.

Let me know - traded with a friend for the summer and my board is currently summering in Ely.
