Open water

Post by surfalex »

I just finished a flight that took us straight south of the twin cities. Got a good look at what's frozen and not. If you are desperate for open water and kiting/ windsurfing you have to drive about 6.5 hrs south and get to a point about 100 miles north of Kansas city. Last year I had my first water session on Calhoun on 4/1. Just don't think that'll happen this year.

What is the name of the lake North of Kansas City? Where is the launch. I used to live in Missouri, but I don't know any good kiting spots down there.

Thanks,

Josh

I realy couldn't tell you. It was just the first body of open water I could spot from 37000 flying south from the twin cities.

The lake is likely Smithville Reservoir... Smithville, MO. There's good launches on both north and south shores.

saw a lone kiter ripping it up on a 40 degree day , with 30 plus knot south wind , in january. it looked cold. The reservoir looked like it would work on a lot of wind directions.

My son-in-law kites there.

I called him, and YES Smithville Reservoir opened up two weeks ago.

From Minneapolis it's a 6 1/2 hour drive.
