I am a beginning kiter and can get up on a 142 cm2 bidirectional board in good wind pretty well. I got a recommendation for a light wind board and I wanted to ask others what they think?? The board is a Liquid Force Kite Fish 5'3" unidirectional board. It has straps that can be removed. Has anyone tried this board and how hard is it to learn to use a unidirectional board? Unfortunately, I live a way out of town and it is hard for me to get in for lessons or to try a board like this when I have time off. I usually kite on Mille Lacs. I have to drive over a half of an hour to get there and it is pretty frustrating for me when the winds aren't quite up to snuff. I really appreciate any of your thoughts on this.

Re: new board
I just got one, but have only ridden it twice. I would say that it isn't a good beginner board, mainly because you must jibe or ride toe-side to go the other direction. I does go well in light wind, however, and is fun in waves. Otherwise a giant twin-tip, like a door, is still the best light wind weapon. I am also seeing other riders choosing the O.R.MAKO KING which can be riden either way, as a twin tip, or a directional, but don't know how it does in very light conditions. Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for the info. Has any one else used the MAKO KING and what do you think of it? I think it looks really great and it has me really interested.

You might also want to check out the Slingshot Glide (149) or the Misfit 146.
I like having a larger board, I think of it as an 'insurance policy' for when you finally get some time off of work, get permission from your significant other to go kiting, then get to the beach and the wind is lighter than expected!
I wouldn't advise trying to learn on a directional, but save it as you progress for the waves!
