Grand Marais - Superior

Post by toyletbowl »

Any feedback for Grand Marais on W or NW winds on Superior? Almost went there yesterday, but got family blocked and it's a 7 hr drive. 25+ winds to 40 and 10-17 ft waves.

Looks like a great place to ride and thinking the jetty would clean up the swells and waves on the inside.

Im guessing you mean Grand Marais, MI...(not Grand Marais, MN). A NW wind would work...straight W might get a little sketchy b/c the shoreline to the West is all high bluffs...

NW at Grand Marais, MN probably wouldnt work...  :D

Yes,
the Upper Michigan Grand Marais. Have you ridden there? The satellite image makes it look clean with straight west or does that point just to the west make it gusty on the inside? Looks perfect though by the image for west winds and clean swells behind the jetty.

I havent rode there yet...just checked it out on a no wind day. Hoping to get there by the end of the season.

Im sure a West would be rideable, just not as clean as wind coming straight off the lake, especially on the inside.

Sick spot, definetely worth the drive...waves on the outside and buttery goodness in the bay and on that small lake/pond thats separated by the beach.

Pasty's are good, too.

To all you Superior Sailors:

The BIGGEST waves you will see on the lake occur from Grand Marais, East in the fall and early winter. I've always wanted to be there when you see those 20-25 foot plus wave forcasts. I suspect you really don't see any of that from shore

Second - that nice two day blow we had over the weekend totally trashed all the summer heating we had on the northern great lakes. Our lake surface temperatures went from 70's to mid 50's at the warmest, and pleanty colder than that. Hope for a NE wind that might bring some of it back.....

I was up in Grand Marais MN last weekend and talked with the owners (?) of a bike/sport shop there. They had foil trainers on sale. They said that there wasn't a scene there although they had tried to get into it at one point. After talking with them I concluded that snow kiting there could be amazing. Awesome town and nice folks.
