Pump Issue

Post by Lebowski »

This weekend, I noticed my Cabrinha pump was only inflating on the downstroke. On the upstroke, I could feel air coming out the top of the pump. I disassembled it, but I didn't see anything easily fixable in there, although there are a couple of rubber O-rings that might be the problem.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what was happening and if it is repairable.

Your help is appreciated.

IN ADDITION TO THE O-RINGS, there should be a small valve on the disc in the plunger. It has a membrane which may be stuck open, stuck closed, or failed completely. If you have another pump, compare it to the one that has failed, to pinpoint the problem.

Any sport store usually has the same pump without the brand logo for around $12.00 to $20.00, it's always good to have a spare or two. You should be able to take it apart and check the big disk and make sure it's oiled good, if it get dry it won't work.

IS it a old cab pump with the black knob on top ? If so that can be turned to inflate only on downstroke or both up and down. Otherwise check for rings and apply some greese as suggested

Make sure the inside is clean! one grain of sand will nick the o ring and cause pressure loss.
Then again, where the hell could sand possibly come from?

Great suggestions, I'll take a look tonight.

Will also look into a spare pump - seems like a good idea to have another around...

Thanks!

Any kind of oil seems to work. Cooking Oil, Penzoil, Synthetic. I haven't tried tanning oil yet  but it would probably work.

Make sure to get all the junk out that collects in there before lubing it up.

Pure silicone spray, inside and on the shaft. (OMG that sounds dirty)

I tried to wear out my pump handle in Jr. High. Somehow, what is left of it has survived until this day. I don't know, is "ORGY BUTTER" is silicone based?
