North Long Lake Bay, Brainerd was the 1st ride time on ice last season Nov. 22nd. Could be earlier this year. Keep an eye on chat for local ice conditions and safety advice.

As far as the metro area. The earliest ice in was the day after Halloween the year of the Halloween blizzard. The latest ice in I can remember was Dec 22nd. I windsurfed on the 21st and thought I could windsurf on Christmas, just to say I did. However a cold still night froze the lake on the 22nd of December. So it all depends on weather. As far as safe ice. Minnetonka can very by bay size and wind direction and speed on cold nights. Phelps and Spring park bay were rideable almost three weeks before main lower lake even froze over last year. I always watch and talk to ice fisherman. They drill holes in the ice and can let you know the ice thickness. Some of them are crazy and will walk out long before I will. Must have a real bad home life to risk their life for a few fish. I feel real safe when I see them pulling a portable ice house behind a four wheeler. I am not ready to stop the water kite season. Lets hope for a long warm Indian summer after this cold snap.
