Hi Leah. I have been wanting to get up to Bayfield this year. My wife has a sisters and children reunion at our house that same weekend. If there's any wind I might be interested and so might Dave H.

I have a co-worker with boat in Bayfield that I may be joining for a bit of sailing in that timeframe, let me know if you find anything more on it.

I have tentative plans to be in that area that Fri, Sat, Sun, too. Was planning to camp out on South Twin Island. I hear Long Island is an awesome location for kiting. Have not heard anything about an event, but it sure would be great to get a bunch together. Anyone have good local knowledge of kiting spots around the Apostles...either by boat or land?!?

Melissa and I will be there. I think Jeff and Joe will be there as well. We are planning on sailing our boats out there around that time... we would be anchoring behind long island, both are hunters. Mine is 12 deg north latitude and Jeff is uncharted.

Anyone know how bad the biting flies are out there this year?

The last time I talked to Mike Fox he said the event was still going.

Hey Stroh - Do you know what kind of event it is or any other details ? When are you guys setting sail ? Im trying to decide when/if to jump on my co-workers boat as he will be in the area all week before and that weekend. Any advice you can give on what to bring up for gear and where to kite would be excellent.

I am not sure what the event will be, I think they had a race last year.

I am going to bring a 10, 14 and maybe a 7m, and two boards. I have only been there once so I don't know what it is like up there.... on the big lake it seems to blow 8-12mph when there shouldn't be wind, and when it should be windy it normally blows close to gale force.... so if you’re have to choose bring big and small with no mid range.

We plan to kite behind long island (bayside) it has lots of shallow warm water. Some of the bays on Madeline Island seem to get a ventury effect. Stockton Island is supposed to have a good flat water spot.

it seems every day I look at noaa exptl there is at least green over the islands.

Jeff is planning on leaving 11th... his boat is faster that mine so I was thinking of leaving a day before and heading to port wing or cornucopia.

Excellent! I should be up there that weekend also! I have got some land on Madeline Is to camp on if anyone is looking for a place to stay near town. The south tip (Grants Pt) of Madeline Is is okay for kiting and Long Is is also good.....shallow, flat and WARM water. Unfortunately is it technically illegal to kite on the Apostle Islands so keep that in mind. Madeline Is is not considered an Apostle Is, but Long Is is.

Shall we meet at Tom's Burnt Down Shack on the evening for some brews.....

I'll be at a resort near Iron River the week prior (the 8th - 14th). I plan on hitting the municipal beach on the west side of Ashland whenever there is wind.

Herbster has a great little campground right on the lake - nice long sandy beaches.

Stroh, if you go early, give me a call!

I'M LOOKING @ NE FRI & SAT! Good thing I'll be busy sweeping out the garage & waxing my fire truck. I looked on the KITERIDERS site, but saw no events there. But don't see why we need an event as an excuse to kite.

Hey Scott!

I have campsite #6 on Rocky for that weekend. How are you getting out there, sailboat or kayak?

Mellisa and I are leaving tomorow (weather premitting) and comming back the 18th.

John Z give me a call when you get out there.

I would not reccomend the area for a novice kiter... unless you have boat support.... but I am not completely familliar with the area

Hello Pete,

We are re-thinking South Twin...might stay close to town Thur, Fri nights, then see about a site on Stockton Sat night. I'm almost embarrassed to say we will be in power boats. How about you? Throwing up a kite in front of your kayak?!? Rocky is a long haul. I can't find your #...mine is 715-577-4749...give me a call.

I have never tried to kite on Superior. I was looking at the satellite views of Ashland. It looks shallow around the beach east of Ashland and all along long island that is actually a peninsula. Of course with the water clarity what looks shallow may be 20 feet deep. Seems this would be a safe area to kite without boat support. Have you tried this area before John. Is the water as shallow and warm as the satellite view leads me to believe. A long drive to get skunked. But it looks like a great place with the right wind direction. Some feed back on area from riders that have rode this area would be nice. It also looks real shallow between Sand bay on mainland and Sand Island. Look at those breaking waves on satellite view.
Thanks in advance:

long island is a great spot. it has huge shallow sandbars and some very warm water (for superior). we were anchored behind long the last two nights, I was planning on kiting flatwater there today, but the wicked storm that came through last night swamped our motor and gave us troubles so we had to use the good wind to get to a marina.
to get to long Island you need a boat, there are no roads, and the penusila is an indian reservation.
right now it is a penisula but when the water is high long island seperates.

sand island/bay is a spot I have been looking foward to riding for a long time. those arn't waves breaking that is the sand bar. it is so shallow we decided not to risk tring to cross it and went around sand on our way here.

Jon thanks for the info. Hope our motor will be a cheap fix. I think it would be fun to kite the 7 miles to long from the beach at east end of Ashland.

Great, it will be fun to kite with others up there!

Bring the fly swatter.....they might be bad up there this time of the year!

If anyone needs a boat ride to Long Island, let me know...trying to get a pontoon out there.

Or stop at the shop....Adventure Vacations, right in town on Madeline Island.
