Wow, went out to the WBL today. Wind was light not a big problem. I couldn't believe how washboard the surface is. I am not trying to offend anybody but this is the second time this season I have been to the lake, I must say I think I am going to stick to the fields. The lakes seem to get super hard and rough from all the people driving and snowmobiling. I not sure why I am even making this post other then to try convince people that there are much better spots than the lakes. Just get out there and try something different.

Hey cautionkid,
I totally agree with finding terrain as opposed to frozen lakes. I've spent the last week riding backcountry terrain in Utah and it will be really hard to go back to frozen lakes. Climbing the hill and shredding down and launching off the slope and gliding forever is a thrill I've never come close to on a sheet of ice. I guess it helps that there's feet of powder, but I will definitely be looking for terrain to ride when I eventually have to come back to the frozen tundra of Minnesota. I'll have to check out that Ramsey spot you ride. There has to be some other places to ride--closer than Utah, Montana, Colorado...
See you there sometime, Seth

how are the conditions on Calhoun? I am thinking of Kite Island around noon unless the surface of Calhoun is better. I think that is a long shot though...

Was on Big Marine again this afternoon, though the snow was "stiff" and there are some truck tracks here, it is very rideable, especially on skis. There are very few hazards that need to be avoided, and areas of the lake where there is no evidence of vehicle traffic at all. With the WNW wind today it had about a mile and half of fetch for kiting on the SE side, and the wind that was nice and steady at around 15kt. I had a great session!

Eric,

I assume you are kiting down by the Red square. If you are interested my family owns a farm on the eastern bay over by the yellow box on the map you can park and ride from there any time. Give me a call I'll get you directions if your interested.

I had a great session today on Waconia, but only because some smowmobile grommers were out making a perfectly lined up path on the SE corner. I don't know why thery were there, but I sure am thankful. The snow was horrible everywhere, but beautiful on the thirty or so foot wide groomed track. Here's hopin for some more snow soon.

Thanks, Avery! I'll keep your number handy. It would be fun to explore the east bay when wind is straight west.

I usually drive onto the lake from the public landing/beach at the west end of the road that intersects the corner of 177th St N and May ave. For those not familiar, just stay on that road on a west heading and you'll come to the landing. I park the van just a bit NE of the red square on your map, drop an ice anchor near my vehicle and ski the whole bay.

Again, this lake is very rideable right now!
