HI in early April

Post by Chris K »

I'm heading to Honolulu in early April. Anyone have a suggestion for where novice kiters should kite while on Oahu? I've heard Kailua, but also heard the winds have been very light (5mph).

FYI, I can now reliably stay on top of the water (hey don't laugh), but am still learning to stay upwind. I'm bringing my 7.5m inflatable, but hoping to bum my bro's 12m inflatable (I'm 153 lbs).

Mahalo for any thoughts.

Going to Oahu next week

Hi. I've read your Kailua postings and am wondering about your post-vacation thoughts. We will be in Waikiki for a week.

Try Kailua bay from Kailua beach park----in April the trades should start blowing steady side/onshore. You will probably need the 12 meter kite since the winds are steady but not particularly strong. Say hi to my son, Luke, a displaced Minnesotan who now teaches kiting and windsurfing for Hawaiian Watersports in Kailua.

I'm sure you'll have good winds, Tom, but I was skunked the entire week (10 days actually) in late March early April 2003. Winds were lite (5mph) to non-existent and the surf waves were also lacking. So rather than kite, we toured the island (Arizona and Missouri Memorial, Polynesian Cultural Center, etc.).

As Terry mentions, you should try Kailua Bay.
