Advice needed - Padre this weekend!?

Post by Paul_c »

My unbelievably generous wife surprised me last night with a trip to SPI THIS WEEKEND! I am humbled and in (pleasant) shock, but I have yet to research this destination. I have searched the Forums for "padre" and gathered a lot of good info that I will read ASAP (Thank you, one and all!).

Looks like I'm staying way down at the south end of the Island, right in the corner of the little westerly dogleg that points toward the mainland. I am a level 2 (maybe) windsurfer, I have never tried Kiting, but would like to.

In your opinion(s), will I need a car at all? Will I need one that I can put a board INSIDE of? Meanwhile, Does anyone know of any local folks who are down there now? Is that location on the island a good one, or should I try to get accomodations farther up?

Thank you all for your advice!!

Check out the Destinations page of this site.

Most of the windsurfing takes place just north of the town of South Padre Island Tx. at a place called the Flats and the North flats. You can also launch at Windsurf Inc for a small fee (which includes a hot shower).

If you have any interest in Kiting, I would highly recommend taking a lesson with Teran, or Jeff Hoxtell or South Padre Island Kiteboarding. This is THE place to learn and all of those operations will provide top notch instruction.

Don't know who may be down there now.

have fun.

Thanks, Tighe!

The destinations page has been helpful. Thanks for the recommendations.

regarding your post:

"I would highly recommend taking a lesson with Teran, or Jeff Hoxtell or South Padre Island Kiteboarding."

Are Teran or Jeff Hoxtell at a particular shop, or are they independents? If they're independents, how would I contact them?

Jeff is the owner of AirPadreKiteboarding and his info is in the destinations page.

Teran...hmm. anyone else have his contact info? He monitors this chat so maybe he'll chirp in.
Otherwise ask at Windsurfing Inc.

Padre weather this weekend! SCARY

Post by t »

Better bring you drysuit, hood, boots and gloves if you want to sail or kite here this wknd! It's already windy and should continue to be until Saturday. I kited the gulf yday in large, pounding but fully disorganized swell and beat the hell out of my knees and back but its worth it! Gusts were to 35mph Avg about 28mph and 73 dgrees. Today should be do-able with proper gear (semidry or drysuit+accoutrements). Sat and Sun will be warmer but still only in the low-mid 50's with maybe some large kitable conds-we'll see. If you have any ?s you can call me at 956-434-1533. --Teran Hughes
