SwitchBlade~Freeskate~North Long~First Ice Updates

Post by Boardsports USA »

Lars- I know we probably don't need to remind you about first ice updates on North Long Lake Bay. Just want to make sure you don't drop the ball this year. You will let us know when that ice has 3-4 safe inches right? Hopefully we don't get the Sherriff and DNR all ruffled again about the thin ice.

Todd Hanson- Are the hand sharpeners ready for the Switchblades yet? I need to get a GPS to log my switchblade miles this winter. I'm sure I will be able to go so much faster now that i have that custom painted helmet...

You funhoggers keep us informed. :)
There are some ponds around here just south of St. Cloud that have a thin sheet of ice on. All 16 of my Freeskate blades are sharp and ready to score. Also new kingpins to keep the s___t together.

Ice was covering 90% of the lake/ponds (Long Meadow Lake?) under the Cedar bridge over the MN River this morning.
I'm not hot for the ice yet but I know a bunch of you are.

I'm going up to check the bay today...I will post the results.

It had a full sheet of ice Thanksgiving day...but only about 1-2" max!! It is probably snow covered now also.

Checked the ice...It is running about 2" consistent...Crack and sink with every step at 220 lbs...Have fun on the fields. The snow and surface is usually harder early in the morning.

I Will keep you guys posted on the ice conditions in the Brainerd Lakes Area-Jason

Thanks Jason, I'm getting excited about the ice. Actually I get excited over lots of things.
Do you think the ice will be ready by this Friday?

The ice is getting close but I wouldn't rush it. Remember North Long Lake is the lake and the Bay that has had the Mystery Black Hole in the Ice. So if you do venture out make sure to stay in a safe area.

The Cops and Fire Rescue guys for sure don't want to come to have to fish any of us kiters out of the lake.

SOON< REAL SOON!!

Hey Jason,

Last year didn't you follow me over that "Black Hole" with your kite & skates? Then we nervously laughed it off after realizing what we just did. I remember the ice only looked about 1/2" or less over the hole.

I don't think Freeskates float. Yikes!

North Long Lake-371 Bay-Nov. 30th 2004-
Ice thickness about 2.5"-3"

Image

Still crackin' with every step. Sketchy to say the least. The one plus is that I put a nice session in and was never at anytime over 2' ft. of water. Worst case scenario I get wet to the knee. I also had some comfort in a 14m freight train hooked to my aais if ya know what I mean.

The bad part is the forecast doesn't look promising for additional ice. Also, if I continue to ride there we are sure to stir up trouble with some 'concerned citizens'. Rightfully so I'm sure, but hey you know I just can't wait any longer to do this stuff!! RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!! BE SMART!! DON"T GO OVER YOUR HEAD!!DON'T FORGET ICE PICKS...Have a big kite...blah bla blah...

Todd Hanson the Switchblade man, my nephew and I scored a nice session today on North Long 371 Bay. It was blowing good n steady. The ice was pretty thick and solid at about 3-4 inches. A little bumpy but not bad at all. I'm sure freeskaters would have been happy. Todd was flying a Windwing 12m and I was on an Ozone Frenzy 14m then switched to a Frenzy 10m as the wind picked up. They ain't nottin' like snowboarding on fricken hard ice and really, really lovin' it. 35-40 mph today by all three of us. We gotta get a GPS though...Mike B. also showed on his way home from ice boat sailing over by Fergus Falls.

Anybody else score today? Would like to hear about other locations etc...

If anyone wants to come up and play this week...Please give me a shout so we can sneak out. 1.866.502.8200

What?!

You had a 10M Frenzy in 35-40 mph winds? I thought the 05's were supposed to have more power then last year! When I have my 12M in 20+ winds I get white knuckles... although I still might have some shell shock from the last time I had it out in high winds and broke my finger. Cool to hear you all had a good time though! I'm hoping this snow continues so I can hit the fields around here soon!

I'm guessing they were traveling 35 to 40 and trying to get the first names on the speed chart for the year. ??

You don't miss a beat do ya Rudeboy! Haha. Sweet-yea that would have been freeky out on that sheet of ice in 35-40 mph winds. No dude, I was saying that we all hit 35-40 mph top speed riding on the Switchblade boards...Maybe even faster...Switchblade riding is fast and furious...it adds a whole new dimension for kiting in Minnesota. I honestly can't thank Todd Hanson enough for inventing it. Not to mention extending your kiteboard season to Full On-Year Round. SICK!! The weirdest part is that me and him are like the only two riding the thing. I believe we are planning more demo sessions with it for this season though. As soon as there is good ice in the Metro we will probably come down with a bunch of Switchblade boards to ride n try.
