Calhoun report

Post by Denis »

Wow! Super deep snow at Calhoun. I was trying out a 7.3 Frenzy in 10-15mph wind. I was just rippin'! N wind is not optimal, but not too bad either. Just as I was packing to go home at 11:00, when Peter and Tom showed up with 9.5 and 16m(?) inflatable. Two other kiters came around the same time with a Slingshot B6 (B5?) and a 3m foil. There was a guy with a camera there too. Probably from a newspaper or something. So Peter and Tom, do something cool! :D

The photographer was from the startribune. He took a bunch of pictures of me. Unfortunately, I tore all my friggin stomache mussels on my first jump.
It would have been nice if Alex, Mark, or Voijta were there to style for the camera!

Definatly one of the best days I have ever had on Calhoun! Just enough slightly sticky snow that my toes don't hurt. It was great to get back out on a snowboard. The gusts were never too much, you just lean into them.
On a clear lake with fresh snow I get use to not always looking where I'm going. Well watchout for snowmen on Lake Calhoun! I almost hit two of them.
There was a kiter from the UK flying a Peter Lynn water foil, I didn't get his name. That kite looked very nice and easy to handle as far as launch and landings.
Hope Tom and I had some jumps worthy of the Star/Trib photographer.

I had a great time - can't do this anywhere in the UK. The irony is that the Peter Lynn Waterfoils can't be given away in the UK, but I learnt kitesurfing with them and they are great on snow. I was also using Snowblades (short skis) - a bit more drag in powder but highly manouverable.

I'm going back to Calhoun today.

Hey James,

I'm glad you got your trip timing right. As you might know, we've been waiting for this snow for about 2 months. You might find today a touch colder than yesterday.

My fingers get cold in these temps but there is some preemptive actions you can take. One is kiting hard for 15 mins but stop before you fingers get too cold and take a break. Once your core has warmed up, blood will start to flow to your fingers. It will hurt for a bit but then the rest of the day should be good.

The other thing to try is to do some pushups or other exertions before kiting to pre-warm the core up to get the blood floing to the extremities. This is somthing that works well for some.

Next time you come to MN, let us know! We have a thriving softwater scene as well.

Cheers,

Sounds like it is going to be another perfect day today- and with a clear sky even.

You know, the worst thing about this sport is having days like today with fresh powder and awesome wind while not being able to go. Hopefully I can make up for it on the weekend.

Please rip up the lake for me,

Michael
