Ok, after 3 years (- ACL replacement) I have gotten my first waterstart. We had a cabin rental on a small lake by alexandria, skeptical, but hopeful still brought my board and sails. The first 3 of 7 days were moderately sailable (enough for a ride here and there). The next one dead. But on Day five I landed it. I was pumped for another but the next day no wind. All in all I got what I wanted out of our family vacation.
SteveB: I sailed that 7.5 you sold me, it was nice in the lighter winds.
That is a BIG step forward. Compareable to learning to use a harness.
After you really get waterstarts nailed down the lake is no longer a collection of shallow (safe) spots and deep areas (where you loath to fall 'cause it is such an energy drain to get going again). You are freed from the shoreline and the whole lake becomes a table top to play on, and stong winds become your friend even more than before.
THE HOUSE carries Curtis fins. True Ames also has an extensive line of fins, but they aren't carried locally. I've tried both brands with slightly better luck with Curtis. Ames now makes a progressive curve shallow water weed fin that looks cool, but haven't tried one yet. I think Curtis has something similar that can be ordered locally.
