cutting upwind...

Post by aransavage »

Ok, I've got a question for you guys... When I get up on a plane, I tend to start cutting upwind. Is this because of my weight position on the board, the sail or both? Is the position of my harness lines on the boom perhaps set incorrectly?

Thanks!

Could be one or all of those.
When I first started getting on a plane I also had this problem. My deal was I had too much weight on my feet and not in the harness which sunk the windward rail and drove the board upwind.

Also try the mastfoot further forward, the harness lines further back, and the footstraps further forward.

Lots of great tips on this forum:

Andrew,

I can totally relate! I recalled writing a story about the first time I got on a plane and did the same thing. It was such a blur for me. Things were happening so fast and I had no idea what to do next. The only thing I do remember clearly is laughing so hard after each crash that I almost downed serveral times. Planing on a windsurf board was, and still is, one of the most "other-worldly" things I have ever felt.

For me it's as close to going to church as I get.

They say that FAITH is the demonstration of things not seen.

Have faith. You will be doing all the things you can only imagine very shortly... Just keep going to CHURCH (hehe, time on the water).

From Tighe's old site:

Date: June 21,01
Lake:Waconia
Story:I'm still buzzed from what happend today.

I stayed up really late last night and watched a movie called "Get Shorty". I thought the movie was really funny and deserves a second viewing. Unfortuantely I planed on sailing Thursday at Weedconia and the time was now 4AM. I would get about 5 hrs sleep if I wanted to be on the water at 11 as planned.

The forcast was for North wind 10 to 15 MPH. Perfect for a water hazzard like me learning how to use my new Sailworks Retro 9.5. I got to the DNR launch and the wind looked a little off more off shore than I anticipated. You could see the wind and a cap or two but it looked rather mild.

I rigged up my dream sail and just as I was getting ready to shove off guess who pulls up? Mike W! Ya Hoo! Mike has a simialar setup (Starboard Formula 155 and 10.9M Name I Forgot brand sail. Here's a picture of his setup as he stepped out of Weed Bear Lake this April http://www.downhaul.com/misc/010419/images/P4190033.jpg

Mike is the fastest Rigger north of the Rio. He was in the water before I was and I got there 30 mins before he did. Watch and learn. Sometimes I think I like to talk more than sail. I'm still a little affraid if there's half a change to plane. I'm working on that.

Now you'll have to realize that I've had about 3 minutes of time on the plane. Two and a half of wich I can hardly remember cause it's all such a blur. The other 30 seconds being taken up by my body being flung off the board over the 'handle bars' I'm not sure you get to count that time as 'Planing' because my feet were not on the board.

We wadded out as far as we could but still had to uphaul and pump some to get out to the wind. Thank goodness for big boards and big sails. Mike mentioned to me before we headed out that most beginers sail too close to the wind when they are trying to get on a plane. I can totally relate to this mentallity. I figure giving up relestate down wind will bring thy nearer to a WALK OF SHAME, somthing that gives me shivers even contemplating. I'll only point my nose downwind If I have already made up some ground by shlogging all day long. Mike said you need to point downwind some, give her hell and a few pumps, get on plane and point back up. I've seen this done many times in person and on video. I've never had the guts to try it.

Well today I did. Perhaps it was from not getting enough sleep or watching a funny movie or not having my wheaties. I did try it a few times and it worked. I would schlog along, see a puff of wind, bear off, pump or wiggle and plane up! Getting on a plane is one thing. Knowing what to do after you do is another.

I almost felt like I was windsurfing now. The feeling is so cool when pointing downwind slightly, feel the power of the sail and 'feed' the board forward with my feet and get in the strap (i got into the rear strap once but when I put my heel down a fountain of water gushed forth and nearly blinded me) and start to head back up wind pushing with the rear foot against the outside rail of the board.

Words can't really describe what it is like for me when doing this. It's scarry, It's fun, It's peacefull, It's intense and a thousand other things all at the same time. Perhaps that's what keeps folks doing it into their 90's. Chasing Wind. Windancing.

One thing that I do find odd is that I find myself laughing out loud. It's kind of a silly giggle that just comes over me and I can't stop it. I found myself laughing on the board, in car driving to work and at work. I'm laughing right now as I write and remember. Does this happen to anyone else?

PS: The worst part about sailing this year is my hands. Last year I did alot more 'parking lot' sailing wich kept my hands harder. This year not as much. My hands have turned into wusy computer nerd hands. The mere though of clamping them on to the boom gives them blisters followed by red meat. I'll try to sail more and make them obey!
