Superior - Dry suit only?

Post by Paul_c »

Is the Superior side of Park Point ever warm enough for a beginner in a 5/3 steamer, or is that playground strictly for the big boys in dry suit$?

No! Absolutly not! The lake temperature averages near 40 degrees year-round. If you go and sail on a HOT day when the wind is offshore, the cold subsurface water will be upwelling and you will find VERY cold water. But if you sail during the summer in shore break, in onshore conditions, the sun warmed surface water stacks up and you will find very comfortable 70 degree water or better at times. The problem is the air temp may be virtually the same so you can get a bit chilled without a at least a shorty wetsuit.
