Wind in Italy

Post by kitingfox »

Hey All...I'm heading to Florence for a month to do a little studying. Seeing all of the coastline I thought that I'd do a little research and see what was nearby for kiteboarding.

Looks like there is a lot out there, but I haven't been able to nail down anything specifically. So far my best bets seem to be either Lake Garda, which is 7 hours or so from Florence, or Livorno, which looks to be just an hour or so away.

I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience kiting/windsurfing in northern/central Italy? I have located a school in Livorno but they don't seem to respond to emails...

Anyhow, just thought I'd see if anyone could give me some good info/contacts before I go.

Good Wind!

A month in Florence! Sounds great.....we traveled to Italy in early May 2002 and found windsurfing rentals at the north end of Lake Garda just north of Malcesine. The north end of the lake becomes narrow and is surrounded by snow covered mountains. As you go south along the lake the land becomes gradually less hilly ----the southern end is perfectly flat. Apparently the difference in altitude of the land and subsequent difference in temperature between the north and south end sets up thermals that make for great sailing. Unfortunately the two days we were there were overcast and drizzly, winds didn't materialize so I didn't get to sail. I checked out the rentals at a business called Conca D'Oro----friendly staff who all seem to speak five languages, JP boards, Neil Pryde sails and a beautiful launch site. They even have a small cafe serving beer, wine and great sandwiches.

I've got a small brochure with a few pictures I could send you. Here are the contacts it lists and a web site you can try. These are from 2002 so may not be current.
