Windsurfing equipment advice

Post by Jacek »

I am looking for some help picking the right equipment for me to get back into windsurfing. I have been windsurfing for about 9 years now, but have not had any water time in last 2 years. I used to be an "intermediate" sailor: no problem with water starts, no problem with jibes, but that is probably changed by now. I am looking for the whole equipment set, since i don't have any right now. I am not exactly familiar with the local wind conditions either, as i have done all of my sailing in europe, i don't know what kind of winds i should expect. I am lightweight - 135 lbs. I was thinking about getting a foregiving freeride board about 115 liters for now, to get me back into the swing of things. What size rigs would you recommend that would be appropriate for minnesota's wind conditions?

I have been following this forum for about a year now and it sounds like you have a great comunity here for windsurfing and kiting. I am excited to get on the water soon.

I was also thinking about getting into kiting sometime this summer as it seems like a great sport and a good compliment to windsurfing to get the most even out of the lightest breeze.

Unfortunately around here we have more light wind than strong, it can also be gusty.
If you plan to be really selective a 115 litre board will work for the 15 plus winds. Here though we tend to be 5 to 15 gusting 20. for that reason I think most would agree a slightly bigger board would get you more sailing time.
There's many boards on the market now in the 260cm length category which are wide enough to handle a wide range of sails. The Bic techno 2,Bic Blast, starboard carve 131+, mistral emotion, ahd ( I think it's the 75 but I could be wrong) and F2 are examples of the new shape boards which can handle from a 5.5 to as big as a 10m. And be fun regardless of what size sail you are on.
The swap meet at the house in St Paul,May 8th, would be a great place to start looking.
You would meet a lot of people you see posting here, many of them would be glad to help you, especially if they are selling a board that would work for you.
