How ye all doin, fellow worshipers of "Fast Air."
When I started windsurfing back in May of 2001 A.D. it looked like the interest in windsurfing was wanning.
But that's the way it's always been in my 15 years of "Windsurf Addiction." I visited "The House" one late May Saturday, 2001
and bought two trainer sails (5 meter and 4 meter). I had bought a used Hyfly 12 ft. from a "Classifed's from local newspaper with a broken "tendon" u-joint.
Long time House rep. (J.C.) fixed (o rather improvised and made me a "U-joint" out of rubber and a stain-less steel bolt.
It worked for my first year. Ever since I've been a windsurf boarder hoarder! But that first day at "The House" Boardshop was very quiet and kind of (as everybody says) "Surreal." Here, where two boards with sails attached were hanging from the high ceiling of the The House (which then resembled a "Warehouse" as was the original name (the Sailboard Warehouse).
The display of windsurf boards with sails attached resembled something like a museum like the Smithsonian with fighter aircraft and airplanes hanging from the ceiling. There were masts (fitted together stretching 20 ft. into the air) on display for sale. Lots of sailboards and gear for sale and sails hanging stretched out.
But still nobody really around,,,and this was Late spring,,really in the height of windsurfing season!
Well to cut to the chase,at this time there still were cambered sails and non-cambered sails for sail. But the boards, and
sails and everything have gotten much better (in terms of quality) and the ease to use this gear. Now, more of the wider boards (formula boards) were for sale and just the equipment in general is much better and easier to use then
"literally" tying on the boom to the mast and having a "goofy" skeg to slip into the board as was common in early 80's as opposed to many different fins and types of attachments for the fins available today.
So, I started Windsurfing when (maybe on the decline in popularity) but on the increase in quality! I started windsurfing
at the "right" time and in the right place,,,(Minnesota, Land of 10,000 lakes)! maybe some day 10,000 windsurfers?
Windsurfing is better now then it ever was! And Dave Ezzy, Bobby Naish, and Quetzalcoatl can voutch for this!
BELIEVE me.
Quetzalcoatl out.
Windsurfing on the Rise!
Windsurfing is better now then ever! (The gear is better!)
