New Windsurfers have no nose scoop because?...

Post by Quetzalcoatl »

Why do all "New" windsurf boards are short and Flat? (no nose scoop)?

I've come to the conclusion that maybe almost all (if not all) new windsurf boards are flat on top

and short because..... One reason...probably just easier to make. 2nd reason...Windsurf companies got
sick of owners complaining about their noses breaking (sometimes both sailor's nose and board's nose) on front end of board.

And the third reason is maybe the flat deck top of Stand Up Battle Boards have influenced the design of new windsurf boards.

Anybody else got any ideas?

I sure want to keep some old long boards with high nose scoops in my quiver.

Short boards (i.e., boards with no centerboard), no longer have much nose in front because it doesn't do anything. It isn't part of the water line so it just adds weight/pearls in waves/etc. Boards got wider because more surface area in the water = earlier planing (and everybody wants to be planing). Don't want to make the board longer when you are going fast, so you have to make it wider. Thus, short and wide is the trend. There are tons of advantages of short/wide boards. Once you get into super windy conditions, shapes go back to being a bit more traditional.

I started sailing about 15 years ago (taken the last 10 or so off) and I recalled the short/wide boards starting then??? I currently have Starboard Fish, Excocet Cross and Starbaord Go 150 - these are all right around 8 ft. I love sailing them. Folks said back then that I was SO LUCKY not to have sailed on older style equipment, the "new stuff" was so easy. I agreed!

Are they even shorter and wider now?!?!
