Spinning leash

Post by Tighe »

There have been many attempts to design a good spinning bar with a safety leash. This one is one of the better ones I've seen.

Parts for system?

Post by Tom L »

Tighe, it looks like they start with a North bar and add the parts, all of which seem easy to buy or make. With the exception of the "front line spreader" or the part that looks like a triangle with a ring at each tip. Have you seen this part used by North or is this something they fabricated for this system? This looks like a fabulous system, a little heavy with all that metal, but very ingenious, they really should get a patent.
I'm going to email them for info. TIA

There are numerous systems like this. My problem with most of them is they seem too complicated. This one still seems to have a lot going on though that may be unescapable.

I think the metal triangle is fabricated. Not sure why it couldn't be made of rope and rings, other than giving a clean separation of the lines.

I think adhering to safety guidelines will ensure we can fly for years to come. They are for our protection and others.

The most valuable safety feature I've seen out lately is the quick release on the harness line and chicken loop. If you aren't using a snap shackle both of these are extremely valuable. If you ever get in trouble and are getting pulled while in the harness line or the chicken loop there is very little chance you'll be able to release from your hook. These give you a way out.

Hi Thomas
Yes the bar works great and always unspins. Have used the system for over a year now and only a few times did I have to manually unspin the front lines.
The triangular spreader I made my self as I work for a stainless steel fabrication company. I just used 3 off 1" S/S rings welded together with 5mm or 1/4' 316 S/S rod.

Right on. I really like the one on the Psycho. I have not had to use it yet but it's good to know it's there. I should really test it before I have to use it.

Speaking of shackles and such.....
I just got a Wichard 2673 ($39/ free shipping from sailnet) and kinda got a giggle at the wimpy little string that it comes set up with.... What the hell are you sposed to do with That!!?? A couple hours of playing with the thing, and the string was noticably frayed.. Too short to attatch anything "grab able" to... Seems there are Lots of different ways folks set up the release on these. I think I'm on to something that should work for me, but you still need to pull back on it to release... And.... the Frenzy leash comes apart so you can larkhead the end onto the shackle above the swivel, so it can spin with the rest if the setup.... The Frenzy comes with a loop and pin type release on the chicken loop, but I'd hate to have to re-assemble it in the cold out on the ice... that's why I wanted to add the Wichard, as a primary, and have the "stock" release as a backup....
I suppose the next step is to get some climbing webbing and figger how to hook it to the bar... Thinking of a sewn loop, just have to trial and error to get the length "just" right.... ;-)

Just Mikey thinkin out loud again...
