City Lakes Ice safety
Can anyone comment on the city lakes ice? I was out last Wednesday and the ice was fine, just had to step over a little open water along the shore. Wondering if Calhoun ice is safe assuming you can get past shore water. May try to get out tomorrow depending on conditions.

Re: City Lakes Ice safety
With the wind and snow coming Thursday, me and another guy scouted out the south side of Calhoun and also White Bear Lake (Bellaire side), both ideal spots with the forecasted NE wind. The lakes have 10-30 feet of open water near the shores and the lake ice has deteriorated significantly since the 7/10 of an inch rainfall we had last Sunday. My friend was walking across large chunks of floating ice while scouting Calhoun and saw a couple of large gaps that would be easy for someone to fall through if concealed by the snow. I would discourage anybody from using the local lakes for kiting on Thursday.
Since the local lakes are no longer available for Thursday's storm, does anybody know of any good land options?
Also does anybody know first hand the surface conditions for the SW side of Mille Lacs, specifically if the standing water & slush have drained off yet? (Sometimes the webcams can be a little misleading).

I'll probably be heading to the 109th fields in Champlin after work.
